  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman forward Geary Claxton scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half, including two decisive foul shots near the end, to help lead Penn State to an 83-80 win over Rutgers Wednesday night.

    Penn State (4-2) earned its third straight victory while giving Rutgers (2-1) its first loss of the season.

    Claxton and fellow freshmen Danny Morrissey and Mike Walker combined to score 44 points.

    With Penn State holding an 80-78 lead, Claxton made two foul shots with 8.4 seconds left. After a timeout, Rutgers sophomore guard Quincy Douby hit a driving layup with 3.4 seconds remaining.

    Penn State's Travis Parker, who scored 13 of his 15 points after intermission, made one of two with 2.7 seconds left, and Rutgers senior guard Ricky Shields missed a desperation 70-footer at the buzzer.

    The Nittany Lions’ burly 6-8 center Aaron Johnson had 17 points and seven rebounds for Penn State, while Walker added 15 and Morrissey had 12 and six assists. Shields led Rutgers with 21 points, while Douby had 20.

    Penn State shot a sizzling 70.4% from the field in the first half and finished the game shooting 60.9%. Rutgers shot 42% from the field but was hot from beyond the arc, shooting 10-of-20 from three-point range.

    Sophomore guard Marquis Webb scored 11 points, dished out six assists, grabbed seven rebounds and came up with four steals for the Scarlet Knights.

    Rutgers is next in action on Saturday when the Scarlet Knights host No. 25 Wisconsin at the RAC. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

    TONIGHT’S GAME
    With tonight’s loss, Rutgers falls to 2-1 this season. Penn State takes a 37-28 lead in the all-time series.

    UP NEXT
    The Scarlet Knights remain at home and will host No. 25 Wisconsin on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., facing their second Big Ten opponent this week and closing out a three-game homestand.

    SHIELDS MOVES UP ON CAREER SCORING LIST
    Senior guard Ricky Shields moved into a tie with Keith Hughes (1989-91) for 15th place on the Rutgers all-time scoring list. He began the night in 17th place and moved past Bucky Hatchett (1946-50). With his 21-point performance tonight, Shields now has 1,257 career points.

    DOUBY, SHIELDS PACE BACKCOURT SCORING
    After combining for 40 and 35 points, respectively, in the first two games of the season, Ricky Shields and Quincy Douby continued their offensive exploits tonight, combining for 41 of Rutgers’ 80 points. Shields scored a team-high 21 points and Douby added 20, marking the second time this season that the duo each scored 20 or more points.

    WEBB FILLS THE STAT SHEET
    Sophomore guard Marquis Webb played a solid all-around game tonight, netting 11 points, dishing out six assists and grabbing seven rebounds and recording a career-high four steals in 33 minutes.
