  • CHARLOTTE, NC – The Rutgers men’s basketball team erased a 15-point first-half deficit to earn a 73-71 victory at Charlotte on Monday night in the Scarlet Knights’ 2004-05 season-opener. The backcourt duo of senior Ricky Shields (Upper Marlboro, MD) and sophomore Quincy Douby (Brooklyn, NY) each scored a game-high 20 points in the season-opening victory – the third in head coach Gary Waters’ four-year tenure.

The Scarlet Knights, who were down as many as 15 in the first half at 37-22, climbed back from an 11-point halftime deficit (41-30), taking its first lead since 13-11 six minutes into the contest on a Shields three-pointer to make it 46-45 with 12:20 to play.

Rutgers and Charlotte then traded leads for the rest of the half before Rutgers took a four-point advantage on a pair of free throws by Shields and a layup by senior guard Juel Wiggan (Bronx, NY) with 21 seconds remaining in the contest.

Charlotte’s Eddie Basden, who finished with a team-high 19 points, pulled the 49ers within two points at 71-69 with 10 seconds remaining but Douby sealed a Scarlet Knight victory with a pair of clutch free throws with six seconds left to make it 73-69. Charlotte’s Baldwin Mitchell converted a basket with two seconds left but it was not enough as RU pulled out the victory.

Douby, who opened the game missing his first six three-point attempts, scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the final period. He also contributed six assists, four rebounds, a steal and a block.

Freshman Ollie Bailey (Chicago, IL) earned the start at forward in his first collegiate contest, ending the night with 12 points and seven rebounds, including four dunks during the Scarlet Knights’ second-half run.

Rutgers and Charlotte shot an identical 28-of-55 (47 percent) from the floor. Charlotte held its biggest lead of the night midway through the first half, holding a 37-22 edge.

Rutgers will face St. Mary’s College (CA) in its regular-season home-opener on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
