For the second game in a row, Rutgers (2-1) had a double-digit lead on the road in the second half. Four days ago, against North Carolina, that lead turned into a 71-67 loss. This time, the Scarlet Knights led by as many as 18 in the second half but needed Coleman's free throws as the Owls (0-1) pulled to within four in the final minute.
With the Owls trailing 56-44 with 4:58 left, David Hawkins made six free throws in a 9-1 run that got Temple to within four, 57-53 with 1:05 remaining.
Hawkins, who finished with 21 points and five steals with eight turnovers, missed the second free throw with 1:05 left, but Hawley Smith got an offensive rebound and gave it back to Hawkins, who drove the lane. Hawkins's shot was blocked by Herve Lamizana and Rutgers held the ball.
Mike Sherrod had 11 rebounds and six assists for the Scarlet Knights, who have now won two in a row over Temple in Philadelphia after losing the first 12 games on the road against the Owls.
Temple scored just one field goal in the first 11 minutes of the second half and the Scarlet Knights opened up a 47-30 lead when Ricky Shields hit a 3-pointer with 9:15 left.
The Owls went on a 9-0 run later to pull within nine, 51-42, but Coleman made a driving layup after the Knights broke Temple's press and then launched a 3-pointer with 4:59 left to push the lead back to 12.
After the Owls opened up an 18-17 lead, Rutgers scored 13 of the last 19 points of the first half to take a 30-24 lead at the break.
