  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior guard Jerome Coleman (Brooklyn, NY) scored a game-high 28 points, and junior forward Herve Lamizana (Abidgen, Ivory Coast, Africa) added 16 points and blocked 10 shots, as the Rutgers basketball team defeated the One-World All-Stars 80-76 in a pre-season exhibition game at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Coleman, who was the Scarlet Knights’ leading scorer last season at nearly 17 points per outing, hit on 9-of-19 from the field (including three three-pointers) and sank all seven of his free throw attempts. Lamizana gave Rutgers a solid presence in the paint throughout the game, hitting on 5-of-8 from the field. The 6-10 Lamizana nearly recorded a triple-double as he pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Lamizana came up with his biggest block of the night when he swatted Gordon Malone’s running jumper in the paint, which would have tied the game, with 11 seconds remaining and the Scarlet Knights leading 78-76. Sophomore forward Jason McCoy (Houston, TX) then sealed the victory for the Scarlet Knights when he sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining.

The Scarlet Knights and the One-World All-Stars battled to a 43-43 tie at halftime, as neither team could take greater than a four-point lead. The two teams were tied eight times in the closely played initial stanza. Coleman poured in 12 of his points in the first half.

Sophomore guard Ricky Shields (Upper Marlboro, MD) added 10 points and six assists for the Scarlet Knights. Malone, who played collegiately at West Virginia, led One-World with 18 points, while guard Kareem Reid of Arkansas added 13 points and seven assists.

In their only exhibition game of the pre-season, the Scarlet Knights displayed a better touch from the free throw than a year ago, hitting 77.8 percent (21-of-27) of their foul shots. Last season, the Scarlet Knights shot 58.3 percent from the line as a team.

The Scarlet Knights open the 2002-03 campaign on Nov. 18 when they host Columbia in the Pre-Season NIT.
