  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior guard Ricky Shields scored a career-high 26 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range and freshman guard Quincy Douby hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:11 remaining to give Rutgers a 67-64 victory over West Virginia in the second round of the NIT on Monday night.

The Mountaineers had a chance to tie the game, but Patrick Beilein's 3-point attempt from the right baseline went off the back of the rim with time winding down.

Rutgers (18-12) defeated Big East rival West Virginia (17-14) for the second time this season and advanced to the NIT quarterfinals for the first time since 1990.

The Scarlet Knights will host Villanova on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a game that will be nationally-televised on ESPN 2.

West Virginia overcame an early nine-point deficit to tie the game at 32-32 halftime. Then the Mountaineers rallied from 10 points down early in the second half to tie it four different times.

J.D. Collins hit a 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining for West Virginia to tie the game 61-61.

After a timeout, senior forward Herve Lamizana penetrated into the lane before kicking it out to Douby, who hit a 3-pointer from the left of the key to make it 64-61.

Joe Herber made one of two foul shots to pull West Virginia to 64-62, but junior power forward Adrian Hill, hit two free throws for Rutgers to make it 66-62 with 34.6 seconds left.

Kevin Pittsnogle's slam cut it to 66-64 with 8.8 seconds remaining and Douby made one of two free throws to give the Mountaineers one last shot to tie.

West Virginia got the ball to Beilein in the corner, but his shot over junior guard Juel Wiggan wouldn't fall.

The buzzer sounded with West Virginia trying to track down the rebound.

Douby, who started his second straight game after coming off the bench all season, finished with 15 points. Lamizana had 11 points and three blocked shots.

West Virginia got 16 points and six blocks from center D'or Fischer and 10 points apiece from Tyrone Sally and Beilein.
