  • NEW YORK (AP) — Coleman Collins scored 12 points to lead Virginia Tech to a 61-58 victory over Rutgers in the Big East tournament on Wednesday.

The first-round win put the Hokies (15-13) into the quarterfinals Thursday against top-seeded Pittsburgh. This is the last year in the league for Virginia Tech, which moves to the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

Trailing 35-27 at halftime, Virginia Tech held Rutgers to one field goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half and used a 16-3 run to open a seven-point lead The Hokies went up by as many as nine before consecutive 3-pointers by freshman Marquis Webb brought Rutgers (16-12) within three.

Then it was Virginia Tech's turn to go cold from the field. Leading 54-51, the Hokies never made another field goal but hung on for the win.

Rutgers had a couple of chances to tie in the final minute. Down by two points, Herve Lamizana's pass under the basket went out of bounds. Lamizana hustled back to the other end to block a shot but his outlet pass to Ricky Shields also went out of bounds.

The Scarlet Knights had one last chance but Calvin Wooten missed a 3-pointer as time ran out.

Webb led Rutgers with 19 points and Shields had 16. Virginia Tech's Bryant Matthews, the conference's leading scorer with 22.9 points a game, was held to a season-low 10.
