  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Andre Barrett scored six of his 13 points in the final 3:12 and Seton Hall became just the second opposing team to win at the Rutgers Athletic Center this season, defeating the Scarlet Knights 66-64 on Sunday before a capacity crowd of 8,109.

John Allen added 17 points and Andre Sweet had 16 and nine rebounds for the Pirates (20-9, 10-6).

Kelly Whitney added 13 points and 10 rebounds as Seton Hall ended the Scarlet Knights' eight-game winning streak at home and handed them their second home loss in 15 games.

Rutgers (16-11, 7-9) had two chances to win the tight, hard-fought game in the closing seconds. Freshman guard Marquis Webb had a game-winning 3-point attempt bounce off the rim with just under 4 seconds to play.

Sean Axani, who had an outstanding second half with 10 points and seven rebounds in his final home game, tapped the rebound out to the left wing. Ricky Shields' off-balance 30-footer missed the mark.

The victory gave Seton Hall a sweep of the two games against Rutgers this year and sent the Pirates into the Big East tournament in New York on Wednesday as the sixth seed.

Seton Hall will play Villanova at 9 p.m., with the winner meeting Providence.

Rutgers, the No. 9 seed, will play No. 8 Virginia Tech. The winner will face top-seeded Pittsburgh.

Freshman guard Quincy Douby led Rutgers with 15 points. Senior forward Herve Lamizana had 14 points and seven assists, which tied his career high.

The final 7:31 was an exciting matchup of the two New Jersey rivals.

After Whitney converted a three-point play to give the Pirates a 52-46 lead, the Scarlet Knights went on a 10-2 run with Lamizana making a steal and a big jam to give Rutgers a 56-54 lead, its first since the opening minute.

The Pirates came right back with a 9-2 spurt. Sweet tied the game with a basket in the low post with 4:21 to go.

Barrett gave Seton Hall the lead at 58-56 with two free throws with 3:12 to go, just seconds after the officials made no call on a collision between Lamizana and a Pirates player pushing the ball up the court.

Allen extended the lead to 60-56 with a foul-line jumper with 2:26 to play, but Axani followed the second of two straight missed foul shots by Webb with a putback with 1:55 to play.

After Barrett and Lamizana exchanged 3-pointers, Allen made two free throws to give Seton Hall a 65-61 lead with 33.7 seconds to go.

Douby closed the gap to a point with a clutch 3-pointer with 22.6 seconds left

Barrett made the end exciting, hitting the second of two free throws with 15.7 seconds left.

    POSTSEASON PICTURE
At 16-11 overall, Rutgers will enter the BIG EAST Championship as the ninth seed and take on eighth-seeded Virginia Tech on Wednesday, March 10 at noon at Madison Square Garden. If Rutgers is to advance, it will face top-seeded Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 11 at noon.

    FOURTH SELLOUT OF SEASON
Today’s sell-out crowd of 8,109 is the fourth sellout at the Louis Brown Athletic Center this season. The other sellouts this season were against then-No. 1 Connecticut (1/6), St. John’s (1/17) and Notre Dame (1/31). It is the 15th sellout in the Gary Waters era and 49th in the history of the RAC.

    SHARING THE ROCK
In his final appearance at the RAC, senior forward Herve Lamizana tied his career-high with seven assists. His previous career high was against Boston College on Feb. 3, 2003.

    AT THE RAC
The Scarlet Knights finished the 2003-04 regular season 13-2 at the RAC and 6-2 against BIG EAST opponents. In three season, RU is 38-10 (.792) under Waters at the Louis Brown Athletic Center and 17-7 against BIG EAST opponents.

    SEEING DOUBLE
Herve Lamizana’s consecutive games in double figures streak was extended, as the senior forward finished with 14 points, marking the 12th straight game he scored at least 10 points.

    DOUBY FOR THREE
Quincy Douby scored a team-high 15 points, including three three-point field goals. It was the 17th time this season that Douby has hit multiple three-pointers in a game, and RU is 11-6 in those contests.

    AXANI NEARS CAREER HIGH
Senior forward Sean Axani finished with 12 points, just one shy of his career high of 13 (vs. Virginia 12/21/02). Axani also finished with nine rebounds to narrowly miss his third double-double of the season.

    RU FROM DOWNTOWN
The Scarlet Knights have made 198 three-pointers on the season, which is tied for the second most in single-season school history (1998-99). The single-season RU record is 216, set in 1989-90.
