PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 20, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s basketball team participated in the annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Toy Drive on Friday. Members of the squad delivered gifts to local children between the ages of 3 and 5 at the Acelero Learning Center in New Brunswick.
“It means a lot to me,” said junior guard Myles Mack (Paterson, N.J.). “It’s a great thing to make these kids happy and put a smile on their faces. I’m just grateful to have the opportunity to come here and give back to the community.”
Four classes of children came in and were greeted by an athlete, who took them to pick out a present.
The mission of Acelero Learning is to bring a relentless focus on positive child and family outcomes to close the achievement gap and build a better future for children, families, and communities served by the Head Start program.
The Toy and Book Drive is one of several community service initiatives organized by the SAAC. The SAAC has conducted its annual Toy and Book Drive for more than 15 years.
The visit was coordinated by Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development, Shawn Tucker.
