  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior guard Ricky Shields and freshman guard Quincy Douby each scored 21 points and Rutgers posted its largest margin of victory in nine years with a 102-52 victory over Northern Colorado Tuesday night.

The win will count toward Rutgers' record (15-8) and makes the Scarlet Knights NIT eligible as it assures a winning season. It will not count toward Rutgers’ RPI rating either positively or negatively, as Northern Colorado (5-19) is a provisional Division I program in its first season at that level.

The win represented largest margin of victory since defeating Southern Connecticut State, 108-56, on Dec. 22, 1995. That was also the last time the Scarlet Knights scored more than 100 points. Rutgers' largest margin of victory ever was 56 against Trenton State in 1939.

Senior forward Herve Lamizana had 15 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks for Rutgers, which shot 53.6 percent overall and 14-for-28 from three-point range. For Lamizana, it was his second consecutive double-double, sixth of the season and eighth of his career. Rutgers is 6-0 on the season and 8-0 all-time when Lamizana registers a double-double.

Junior guard Juel Wiggan and sophomore center Adrian Hill added 12 points apiece for the Knights. Vincent Jackson had 18 for Northern Colorado and Matt Kline added 12.

Northern Colorado took a 2-0 lead before two straight three-pointers by Shields sent Rutgers on its way. The Knights held a comfortable 28-12 advantage, then put it away with a 23-0 run in which Douby and freshman center Byron Joynes had six points apiece and Shields added five. The run followed a 30-0 first-half run against Virginia Tech.

Rutgers led 63-19 at halftime on the strength of 11-for-12 shooting from three-point range. The 63 points marked the most points by Rutgers in the 26-year history of the RAC. Shields had 17 in the half on 5-for-6 three-point shooting while Douby hit all four of his attempts from behind the arc. The Bears shot 25 percent in the half.

The Knights added to their advantage in the second half, opening their biggest lead at 55 before head coach Gary Waters sent in the reserves.

Coming on the heels of an 85-52 win over Virginia Tech, the final margin gave Rutgers consecutive wins of over 30 points for the first time since beating Loyola of Maryland and Keene State in the 1992-93 season.
