  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior guard Ricky Shields scored 19 points and hit the decisive free throws with 15 seconds left as Rutgers earned a thrilling 72-70 come-from-behind overtime victory over Miami on Wednesday night.

Rutgers (13-6, 5-4 Big East) won its fourth straight game while sending Miami (13-9, 3-5) to its fourth straight loss and its second straight in overtime. The Hurricanes are 0-3 in overtime this year while Rutgers is 2-0. For the Scarlet Knights, it represents the first four-game BIG EAST winning streak since Rutgers entered the league in 1995-96. The Scarlet Knights own consecutive victories over St. John’s, Villanova, Notre Dame and Miami.

Rutgers freshman guard Quincy Douby, who has won two consecutive BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors, forced overtime with a left-wing jumper with 9.5 seconds left, tying it at 59-59.

With the score tied at 61-61 in overtime, Douby hit a 3-pointer with one second on the shot clock to give Rutgers a lead it would not relinquish.

Douby added two foul shots and fellow freshman guard Marquis Webb made one of two free throws to give Rutgers a 67-61 lead.

Miami cut it to 69-67 with 16.5 seconds left and then fouled Shields on the inbounds with 15.0 remaining; Shields converted both free throws. After Darius Rice missed a 3-point jumper, Miami kept possession and after a time-out, guard Guillermo Diaz hit a three-pointer to make it 71-70 with 1.4 seconds left.

Miami could not get a clean inbounds pass as Rutgers held on for the victory. The Scarlet Knights improved to 10-1 at the RAC this season.

Rutgers is next in action on Saturday when the Scarlet Knights travel up the New Jersey Turnpike to meet Seton Hall. Tip-off at Continental Airlines Arena is 7:00 p.m.
