  • VILLANOVA, PA - Junior guard Ricky Shields scored 19 points and junior guard Juel Wiggan scored a career-first double-double with 10 points and 10 assists to lift Rutgers past Villanova, 71-68, at The Pavilion in Villanova, PA, Wednesday night. The win is the first-ever at The Pavilion for the Scarlet Knights (11-6, 3-4 BIG EAST) and is the first conference road victory since January 2002. Villanova falls to 11-7, 3-3 BIG EAST.

Freshman guard Quincy Douby added 15 points for the Scarlet Knights, including three clutch free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory.

After a layup by Wiggan made it 68-63 with 26.6 seconds left, Villanova's Curtis Sumpter turned the ball over on the inbound pass. But the Wildcats got a steal on Rutgers' inbound pass and Sumpter converted a layup and free throw to make it 68-66 Rutgers with 19 seconds left.

After two free throws from Douby, Sumpter scored to make it 70-68 Rutgers with 17.3 seconds left. Douby made one of two attempts with 5.7 remaining for a 71-68 lead. Villanova's Randy Foye then missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

Shields scored in double-digits for the seventh consecutive game to lead Rutgers to its second consecutive BIG EAST victory. The guard connected on
4-for-9 (.444) from three-point range to extend his streak of multiple three-pointers made in a game to seven.

Rutgers surged out to a 10-point first-half lead at 21-11 just over 10 minutes into the period. Villanova fought back but the Scarlet Knights withstood the Wildcats, taking a 34-32 advantage into the halftime break.

Senior Sean Axani connected on his third three-pointer of his career in the second half to put the Scarlet Knights up 55-54 with just over nine minutes remaining. RU would never fall behind after that en route to the victory.

Senior forward Herve Lamizana came within one rebound of recording his third 'double-double' of the season , finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds for Rutgers.

Sumpter led Villanova with 25 points and seven rebounds and Ray had 16 points.

Villanova took a 54-51 lead with 7:42 left after a 9-0 run. Rutgers then went on a 15-3 run to take a 66-57 lead with 2:28 left.

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts BIG EAST foe Notre Dame at noon at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
