  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman guard Marquis Webb scored eight of his 11 points in the final 1:06 of overtime as Rutgers held on to defeat Monmouth, 78-75.

The Scarlet Knights, 72 hours after defeating No. 25 Providence, had their hands full before overcoming the pesky Hawks in front of a crowd of 5,371 at the RAC. Monmouth raced out to a 20-10 first half lead as Rutgers made just three of their first 16 shots. Rutgers ended the half with a 21-12 surge to cut the deficit to 32-31 at the half.

Rutgers (9-4), which got 18 points and seven rebounds from Herve Lamizana, won its second straight in a rescheduled game that was postponed from Dec. 6 because of inclement weather.

Trailing 60-53 with two minutes remaining, Monmouth (8-5) scored the final seven points of regulation to force overtime.

Dwayne Byfield hit a three-pointer from the right corner with 2.8 seconds left to tie the game at 60-60 and force overtime.

Monmouth took the lead in OT on Brian Boxler's layup, giving him a career-high 17 points. Two foul shots by junior guard Juel Wiggan and a three-pointer by junior guard Ricky Shields gave Rutgers a 65-62 lead and the Knights would not trail again.

With the score 69-66, Webb hit a three-pointer with 1:06 remaining and followed with two foul shots to up Rutgers’ lead to 74-66. Monmouth got within 76-72 before Webb's two foul shots sealed it.

Wiggan scored a season-high 13 points in a season-high 38 minutes of action while senior forward Sean Axani recorded his second career ‘double-double’ with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Rutgers had five players finish in double-digits in Lamizana (18), Shields (16), Wiggan (13) Axani (11) and Webb (11).

In addition to Boxler’s 17, Chris Kenny and Byfield checked in with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Rutgers is next in action on Sat., January 17 at No. 15 Pittsburgh. Tip-off is at Noon.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
Rutgers’ 78-75 victory over Monmouth improves the Scarlet Knights’ record to 9-4 overall. RU is now 5-0 all-time against the Hawks and 33-3 against members of the Northeast Conference. It is the second win this season over a NEC team (LIU, 12/20). Rutgers improves to 3-1 all-time in overtime games under third-year head coach Gary Waters.

    FIRST OVERTIME OF SEASON
Tonight’s contest was Rutgers’ first overtime affair of the 2003-04 season. RU’s last overtime game came on January 4, 2003 against La Salle.
    Overtime Games Under Gary Waters
    Date Opponent Result

    1/13/04 Monmouth W, 78-75

    SHIELDS MOVES UP CAREER CHARTS
Ricky Shields’ three-pointer in the second minute of overtime moved him into a tie with Tom Savage (1987-91) for seventh place all-time with 133 career three-pointers. He has recorded at least one three in all but one game this season (Wisconsin was the only team to hold Shields without a trifecta).

    AXANI FROM DOWNTOWN
When Sean Axani drained a three-pointer from the right corner with three seconds left in the first half, it marked the second time in his career that he connected from three-point territory. His previous three-point field goal came on Jan. 5, 2002 against Georgetown.

AXANI POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE, SETS CAREER HIGHS
With 11 points and 11 rebounds tonight against the Hawks, Sean Axani recorded his second career double-double. Against Buffalo on Nov. 25, 2003, he had 10 points and 12 rebounds in a 78-53 victory over the Bulls. Axani also matched his career high in assists for the second time this season, totaling six tonight. He tied his career high of 35 minutes during regulation, finishing with a career-high 40 minutes in the game.

    WIGGAN SETS CAREER HIGH
Junior guard Juel Wiggan played a career-high 38 minutes off the bench against Monmouth, notching 13 points, just one shy of his career-high of 14 against Notre Dame (3/1/03).

    A BALANCED ATTACK
The Scarlet Knights had five players score in double figures, led by Herve Lamizana with 18 points. Ricky Shields (16 points), Juel Wiggan (13 points), Sean Axani (11 points) and Marquis Webb (11 points) all contributed offensively. It is the fifth time this season – Buffalo, Lafayette, Long Island and Georgetown – that at least five players have scored in double figures for the Scarlet Knights.

    RU ON A WINNING STREAK
Rutgers has now won two straight games after its 65-64 victory over Providence. It is the third time this season the Scarlet Knights have won at least two consecutive games. Their longest winning streak this season was five games.

RU CONVERTS FROM THE CHARITY STRIP
For the eighth time in 13 games, Rutgers converted at least 75 percent of its free throws. The Scarlet Knights shot 25-of-31 (.806) from the foul line tonight.
