  • WASHINGTON, D.C -- Despite a valiant comeback from 18 points down to pull within two points with under a minute remaining, Rutgers fell short in its BIG EAST opener, losing a 63-57 decision to undefeated Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at the MCI Center in Washington, DC. Rutgers falls to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss, while Georgetown improves to 10-0 and 1-0 in league competition.

Down by 10 at 57-47 with under seven minutes remaining in the game, Rutgers went on a 10-2 run, capped by consecutive baskets by freshman guard Quincy Douby (Brooklyn, NY) to come within two points at 59-57.

That was as close as the Scarlet Knights would come, however, as freshman guard Marquis Webb (Paterson, NJ) saw his go-ahead three-point attempt rattle out and, following a Douby failed rebound put-back, Georgetown’s Ashanti Cook eventually came out with the ball and sealed it on the other end with a pair of free throws to give the Hoyas a 61-57 lead. GU added two more free throws by Brandon Bowman, who pulled down the rebound off a Herve Lamizana (Abidgan, Ivory Coast, Africa) failed three-point try with under 30 seconds remaining, to give the Hoya’s the 63-57 victory.

Rutgers found itself in an early double-digit deficit for the second-consecutive game, as Georgetown led by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Scarlet Knights were victimized by 11 first-half turnovers as the Hoyas went on a 19-4 run to open up the 18-point margin at 29-11 less than 12 minutes into the contest.

Rutgers rebounded to pull within 10 at the break at 38-28.

The Scarlet Knights chipped away at the Hoya lead in the second period, pulling within eight several times. RU outscored Georgetown, 29-25 in the second half.

Douby led Rutgers with 14 points off the bench, while sophomore forward Adrian Hill (Canton, OH) nearly missed his first career ‘double-double’ with 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds.

Playing in just his third game of the season, sophomore guard Calvin Wooten (Detroit, MI) collected 12 points off the bench for Rutgers. Wooten was sidelined for the first seven games of the season while recovering from a knee injury suffered during the offseason.

Georgetown limited RU’s top two scorers, Lamizana and Ricky Shields (Upper Marlboro, MD) to a combined seven points with Lamizana recording four and Shields contributing three. Shields tied his career high with 10 rebounds in the game.

Georgetown was led by Bowman, who had a game-high 20 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals.

Rutgers continued its strong performance from the foul line, hitting on 6-of-8 (.750) free throw attempts. Lamizana converted both his attempts from the charity strip and has hit his last 18 consecutive attempts.

Rutgers will return home to the Louis Brown Athletic, where it has not played since an 80-54 victory over LIU back on Dec. 20, 2003, to face top-ranked Connecticut in the BIG EAST home opener on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
