PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 20, 2012) – Rutgers men’s basketball head coach Mike Rice will rappel the Harborside Financial Center Plaza 5 in Jersey City on Friday, Sept. 28 for Coaches vs. Cancer as part of the American Cancer Society “Over the Edge” event. Rice is scheduled to rappel the 470-foot building at approximately 9:30 a.m. that morning.
“Cancer touches everyone,” said Rice. “In my time working with Coaches versus Cancer, I have been inspired by many wonderful people fighting this terrible disease. As such, I have said that I would do anything in the fight against cancer. Put up or shut up. I’m putting up. Up high, actually.”
Fans, family and friends can support Rice’s rappel and donate toward the fight against cancer by visiting his page on the event’s donation site at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/mikerice.
Rice is an active member of Coaches vs. Cancer and its many endeavors. In March, he was named to the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer National Council. Last week, he participated in the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Leadership Summit and Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. Prior to each season, he and wife Kerry host a Tip-Off Dinner at the Rutgers Athletic Center surrounding a team practice to increase awareness and raise funds. This season’s dinner will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. Last year’s inaugural event was a resounding success and raised approximately $40,000 in the fight against cancer.
As of Sept. 19, “Over the Edge” had raised $232,000. The event’s “VIP” event will be Friday, with the main day taking place on Saturday. Mack-Cali donated the use of the building. 135 people will be rappelling over the two days.
