  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Freshman Quincy Douby scored a career-high 21 points and Rutgers pulled away in the second half for a 77-67 victory over Temple Wednesday night.

Rutgers (3-1) still trails the series, 31-16, but has won three of its last four against Temple (0-3) and snapped a three-game home losing streak to the Owls.

Douby shot 7-for-11 and 4-for-6 from 3-point range, and Rutgers was 12-for-23 on 3-pointers. Herve Lamizana added 15 points and seven rebounds for Rutgers while Ricky Shields had 14 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Marquis Webb had nine points and eight assists.

Temple had its best shooting night of the year but still hit only 41.8 percent and was 6-for-23 from behind the arc. Mardy Collins had a career-high 22 for Temple and David Hawkins had 18.

Holding a nine-point halftime lead, Rutgers gradually built its advantage to 77-57 with 3:28 left.

Douby hit a 3-pointer to give Rutgers a 14-11 lead with 12:45 left in the first half and Rutgers never trailed again. With the score 54-43, Douby hit two straight 3-pointers and Webb added another 3-pointer as Rutgers opened a 63-48 advantage.

In the first half, Rutgers rallied from a 9-2 deficit for a 16-11 lead. Temple cut it to 21-20 before the Scarlet Knights used a 14-4 run to open its biggest lead of the half, 35-24.

Rutgers led 37-28 at halftime after holding the Owls to 35.7 percent shooting. Douby had 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Temple stayed in it thanks to 7-for-7 shooting from the foul line.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
Rutgers’ 77-67 win over Temple improves the Scarlet Knights’ record to 3-1. It is the second straight win for Rutgers in the series, following last year’s 59-53 decision at the Liacorous Center.

    RU WINS GOING AWAY
The 10 point margin of victory was Rutgers’ largest in the Temple series since Feb. 1, 1991 when RU defeated Temple by 19 points (82-63). The back-to-back wins against the Owls is the first time the Scarlet Knights have taken two straight from Temple since the 1988-89 campaign (2/23/89 RU 77, Temple 64; 3/6/89 RU 62, Temple 59).

    SCARLET KNIGHTS BOMB AWAY
Not only was the 12 three-point field goals made by Rutgers tonight a season high, it was the most RU has made since Feb. 17, 2002 when the Scarlet Knights hit 12-of-27 three-point field goals in a 64-61 win over Miami.

DOUBY SETS CAREER HIGH WITH 21 POINTS
Freshman guard Quincy Douby had the best offensive output of his young career, netting 21 points in 22 minutes. He made four three-point field goals, also a career high.

The freshman backcourt of Marquis Webb and Douby combined for 30 points, eight assists, six rebounds and seven three-point field goals.

WEBB SETS CAREER HIGH IN ASSISTS
Freshman guard Marquis Webb set a career high with eight assists against Temple. His previous high was six against Buffalo on Nov. 25.

    JOYNES CLEANS THE GLASS
Byron Joynes established a career high vs. the Owls with eight rebounds. His previous high was four at No. 15 Wisconsin on Nov. 29.

    STRONG OUT OF THE BLOCKS
After falling behind 9-2 in the game’s first minutes, the Scarlet Knights charged back in a big way, going on a 14-2 run to take a 16-11 lead with 11:43 to play in the first half. The run was highlighted by three-point baskets from Quincy Douby and Ricky Shields, as well as a slam dunk rebound by Sean Axani.
Rutgers’ 86.7 percent free-throw shooting was the highest since the Scarlet Knights sank 22-of-24 free throw (.917) against James Madison on Dec. 2, 2000 in a 77-68 victory at the RAC.
