PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 6, 2012) – Rutgers men’s basketball head coach Mike Rice will participate in the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Leadership Summit and Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Sept. 13. A rally behind the United States Capitol will take place at 10 a.m. that day including members of Congress and Coaches vs. Cancer coaches to highlight the need for increased funding for cancer research and prevention programs.
Rice is an active member of Coaches vs. Cancer and its many endeavors. In March, he was named to the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer National Council. Prior to each season, he and wife Kerry host a Tip-Off Dinner at the Rutgers Athletic Center surrounding a team practice to increase awareness and raise funds. This season’s dinner will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. Last year’s inaugural event was a resounding success and raised approximately $40,000 in the fight against cancer.
The Coaches vs. Cancer Rally is a component of the larger ACS CAN Leadership Summit & Lobby Day. Each September, ACS CAN convenes its top advocacy volunteer leaders and staff - about 600 people - for two-and-a-half days of training, networking, and meetings with their Members of Congress.
ACS CAN is a nonprofit, nonpartisan grassroots organization dedicated to making the fight against cancer a top national priority. As the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, ACS CAN has a nationwide structure of volunteers who put a face on cancer.
