  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Freshmen Quincy Douby and Marquis Webb combined for 30 points, including 11 in the deciding run, as Rutgers defeated Lafayette 71-65 Saturday night.

Douby scored 17 points and Webb had 13 for Rutgers (1-0), which won for the ninth time in its last 10 meetings against Lafayette (0-1).

Herve Lamizana, expected to be Rutgers' offensive leader this year, scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help the Scarlet Knights overcome the stubborn Leopards.

Ricky Shields added 15 points for Rutgers, which shot just 39 percent and was outrebounded 40-33. Lamizana had eight rebounds and two steals. Justin DeBerry had 19 points and five assists for Lafayette, while Mike Farrell had nine rebounds.

Lafayette led 48-39 with 11:45 left in the game before Rutgers tied the score at 51 with a 12-3 run.

With the score tied at 55, Douby hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to give Rutgers a 58-55 lead with 4:26 remaining, and the Knights did not trail again.

Rutgers held a 64-61 lead with 22.8 seconds left when an intentional foul was called on Lafayette's Pat Betley. Webb hit two foul shots and, after Rutgers inbounded, Webb was fouled and made two more free throws to make it 68-61 with 21.8 seconds left.

Rutgers coach Gary Waters played Webb, Douby and freshman Byron Joynes together for several stretches in the game and the trio held its own. Douby had five rebounds, three assists and three steals, Webb had three rebounds, four assists and two steals and Joynes had three points and three rebounds. Webb shot 4-for-5 and Douby was 4-for-12 from the field and 7-for-7 from the foul line.

Trailing 5-3, Rutgers played its three freshman together midway through the first half and the result was a 14-6 run and 17-11 lead. The Knights equaled that advantage at 25-19 before the Leopards rallied to tie it at 28-28. Rutgers took a 31-30 lead into intermission thanks to Shields, who scored all nine Rutgers points in the final 4:44 on three 3-pointers.

Rutgers led at halftime despite shooting 40 percent with 10 turnovers. Lafayette shot 50 percent but committed 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
With tonight’s 71-65 victory against Lafayette, the Scarlet Knights record in season-openers is now 65-25 (.720). It marks the second consecutive year the Scarlet Knights have won their season-opener.

    WEBB, DOUBY IMPRESSIVE IN DEBUT
Freshman guard/forward Marquis Webb (Paterson, NJ) provided a spark for Rutgers off the bench in the first half, scoring his first collegiate basket at the 13:28 mark of the first half on a pull-up jump shot. His first career three-pointer came with 12:18 to play. Not to be outdone, freshman guard Quincy Douby (Brooklyn, NY) made his first collegiate three-pointer with 9:15 to play before halftime, while Byron Joynes (Baltimore, MD) scored his first career points on a lay-up with 8:34 remaining in the first half.

Douby gave Rutgers its first lead since halftime when he hit a three-pointer from the left corner at the 4:25 mark of the second half. He added two critical free throws with 31.6 second left.

NEW FACES GIVE SCARLET KNIGHTS A LIFT
The three newest faces on Rutgers’ roster – Quincy Douby, Marquis Webb and Bryon Joynes – combined to shoot 12-for-13 from the foul line tonight, including eight-for-eight in the last 32 seconds. The trio scored 33 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed 11 rebounds.

    RU IN OPENERS UNDER WATERS
Rutgers is 2-1 in season-opening games under head coach Gary Waters. Last year, Rutgers defeated Columbia, 60-36, in the first round of the Preseason NIT.

Largest Opening Night Crowd in Five Years
The 5,652 fans who attended Rutgers’ 71-65 victory over Lafayette was the largest season-opening home game for Rutgers in five years. On Nov. 14, 1998, Rutgers, which tied the school record with eight sellout crowds last season, drew 7,218 fans in a 72-55 victory over Wagner.

HILL, WIGGAN MAKES FIRST CAREER STARTS
Sophomore center Adrian Hill (Canton, OH) and junior guard Juel Wiggan (Bronx, NY) made their first career starts tonight. Hill finished with four points in 20 minutes, while Wiggan had one point in 21 minutes.

    RU HAS BALANCED ATTACK
The Scarlet Knights benefited from a balanced scoring attack, as four players scored in the double figures. Quincy Douby had a team-high 17 points, while Ricky Shields added 15 points, Herve Lamizana added 13 points and Marquis Webb chipped in with 13 points.

    PRESSURE DEFENSE
The Scarlet Knights’ defense forced Lafayette into 25 turnovers. Sean Axani (Red Bank, NJ) had a career-high six steals.

    A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Herve Lamizana (Ivory Coast, Africa) had a strong all-around game, posting 13 points, grabbing eight rebounds and blocking two shots.

Douby First RU Frosh to Lead team in Scoring in Collegiate Debut in Six Years
With 17 points vs. Lafayette, Quincy Douby became the first Rutgers freshman to lead his team in scoring in the first game of his collegiate career since Jeff Greer scored 13 points in a 64-52 loss to Princeton on Nov. 22, 1997. Greer and junior Rob Hodgson each had 13 that evening. Douby, however, is the first Rutgers freshman to be his team’s solo leading scorer since Charles Jones scored 19 points in a 70-64 win over Manhattan on Nov. 27, 1993.
