PISCATAWAY, NJ – Former Rutgers University catcher Alberto Vasquez (Jersey City, NJ) has signed a free agent contract with the New Jersey Jackals of the independent Northern League. Vasquez inked his contract on Tuesday and will join the team today for its game at Elmira.
Vasquez hit a career-high .297 as a senior in 2003 with seven doubles, two triples and 19 RBI. He also drew 22 walks and posted a .395 on-base percentage for the Scarlet Knights, who finished 37-22, won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional at Tallahassee, FL.
Handling a pitching staff that returned just one senior, Vasquez guides the young hurlers to a 4.66 team ERA and oversaw the development of staff ace Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) who, as a sophomore, posted an 8-5 record, including a 6-1 mark in BIG EAST play. He also threw out 18 base runners in 2003.
Vasquez was a three-year starter for Rutgers and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments in his four seasons of action. He is the second member of the 2003 squad to sign a professional contract, joining Vinny Esposito (Middletown, NJ), who was drafted in the 22nd round by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The New Jersey Jackals are the two-time defending Northern League champions and sit in first place with a 23-15 record in 2003. They play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University.
