  • BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Sophomore Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) struck out a career-high 11 batters, while scattering just six hits, in a complete game, 6-0 shutout of Virginia Tech in the first game of the 2003 BIG EAST Championships, played at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. The Scarlet Knights gave Egbert plenty of run support as they scored six runs on eight hits, all by the fifth inning. With the win, RU improves to 34-18 overall and will play Notre Dame, who defeated West Virginia 9-1 in the opening round, Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Rutgers broke the scoreless tie in the third when Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ). A throwing error advanced Defendis to third and he scored when nine-spot hitter Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ) singled through a drawn-in infield.

Rutgers added three more in the fourth, ending VT starter Jeff Landing’s day. Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) led off the inning with a single and, with one out, Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) singled and Alberto Vasquez (Jersey City, NJ) walked to load the bases. Defendis followed with a sac fly to left, driving home Frazier for a 2-0 lead and, one batter later, Cerulo hammered a two-run triple to the right-center triangle (410 feet away) to plate two runs.

The Scarlet Knights continued to pour it on an inning later when Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ) singled to open the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a triple to center field from Normane, who then scored on a single to right-center by Vasquez.

Those six runs were all Egbert needed. He threw 123 pitches in his complete-game masterpiece, allowing no more than one runner in an inning until the ninth, when Spencer Harris led off with a double and Wyatt Toregas singled with one out. The Hokies most significant scoring threat was quickly erased when Egbert induced a pop up by Brad Bauder and struck out Sheldon Adams to end the game. Harris was one of only two runners to advance past first base against Egbert.

Normane was RU’s lone repeat hitter, finishing 2-for-4. The bottom five hitters in RU’s lineup accounted for six of the team’s eight hits. Egbert faced 33 hitters, allowing six hits (five singles) to improve to 8- 4 overall.

RU is now 14-12 in BIG EAST Tournament games, including 4-4 in opening-round games. RU’s first round win is the first since 2000, when the Scarlet Knights knocked off Pittsburgh, 8-3.
