  • PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA – One day after clinching the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a doubleheader sweep, Rutgers lost, 6-2, to Villanova in the final regular season conference contest for both schools. RU built an early 2-0 lead and appeared headed for its third win, but the Wildcats rallied for five runs in the fourth inning and used outstanding pitching from John Yeager to polish off the win. With the loss today, Rutgers is 32-18 overall and 19-6 in BIG EAST play.

Rutgers, which is seeded first in the upcoming BIG EAST Baseball Championship, will face fourth-seeded Virginia Tech on Thursday, May 22 at 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, West Virginia and Notre Dame will play at 7:00 p.m., with both games set for Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ, home of the Somerset Patriots. A 6-5 loss for Boston College, coupled with a Pittsburgh loss in the first game of its doubleheader with Connecticut, clinched the fourth and final playoff spot for the VT Hokies.

The Wildcats scored five times in the decisive fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Brian Newbold off sophomore starter Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ). Villanova added an unearned run in the sixth, while Yeager shut down the RU offense, limiting it to just two runs on nine hits, holding it scoreless over the final six frames. Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ) was 3-for-4 to lead Rutgers offensively.

Rutgers closes its regular season tomorrow at 12:00 noon, when it hosts Rider in a non-league game at the Class of ’53 Complex. RU’s five seniors – Sean Atchison (Florham Park, NJ), Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ), Leon Shade (Montclair, NJ), Alberto Vasquez (Jersey City, NJ) and Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ) – will be honored prior to their final home game.
