  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Sophomore Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) drilled a three-run double to cap a six –run sixth inning and propel Rutgers to an 8-3 win over St. Peter’s in non-league action today at the Class of ’53 Complex. Rutgers trailed, 3-1, heading into the sixth, but used RBI singles from Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) and Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) to tie the game and Gaynor’s hit to pull ahead. With the win, Rutgers has now won 16 of its last 17 games to improve to 28-15. St. Peter’s falls to 4-30.

St. Peter’s reached RU starter Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ) for a pair of runs in the first on sacrifice flies by Kenny Kopacz and Ryan Knapp and added another in the third on a run-scoring double by Jesse Lewandowski. Meanwhile, Peacocks starting pitcher Dan Cainas held Rutgers scoreless through the first four innings, retiring the first seven hitters he faced and 11 of the first 12. One day after scoring 19 runs in four innings against Princeton, Rutgers was trailing, 3-0, through four.

In the fifth, after leftfielder Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) ended the top of the inning with a perfect strike to home plate, nailing Nick Edwards trying to score on a shallow fly ball, Rutgers finally broke through. Vinny Esposito (Middletown, NJ) led off the inning with a double to the fence in right field and scored one batter later when Normane singled up the middle.

In the sixth, Graig Badger (Union, NJ) reached on a one-out single and moved over to second on a walk to Grose. Frazier then snuck a grounder through the left side, scoring Badger, while Normane singled to right with the bases loaded, plating Grose to tie the game.

At that point, St. Peter’s head coach Jimmy Walsh visited the mound, but chose to leave Cainas in the game to face Gaynor, who has flied out and grounded into a double play in his previous two at bats. Gaynor wasted no time, ripping Cainas’ first offering to the fence in left, sending all three base runners home for a 6-3 lead. He later scored on a passed ball to increase the margin to 7-3.

RU finished the scoring with an unearned run in the seventh when Badger reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Frazier.

Malafronte was strong in the middle innings, holding St. Peter’s scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, he allowed a one-out single and turned it over to Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ), who induced a 5-4-3 double play and then fired two more shutout frames to finish the game.

Malafronte (4-1) allowed eight hits and three runs in 6.1 innings, walking none and striking out three. Dial allowed two hits in 2.2 shutout innings. Esposito (2-for-3) and Normane (2-for-4, two RBI) led the team’s eight-hit effort.

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Notre Dame in a BIG EAST doubleheader beginning at 12:00 noon.

OF NOTE: Badger stole third in the seventh inning, his 29th steal of the season. He now ranks second on the single-season stolen base list, passing Eric Young, who stole 28 in 1989. Former All-American Doug Alongi owns the record with 39 in 1993.
