  • PRINCETON, NJ – Freshman Jim Jansen (Pascack Valley, NJ) fired six scoreless innings to extend his shutout streak to 13 innings and a quartet of Scarlet Knights – Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY), Vinny Esposito (Middletown, NJ), Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) and Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) – knocked in four runs apiece to lead Rutgers to a 20-0 win over Princeton today at Clarke Field. Rutgers set a new single-game high in runs today, besting its previous total of 18 vs. Pace on March 24. It also won for the 15th time in 16 games, improving to 27-15 overall.

Rutgers scored 20 runs for the first time since March 17, 2002, when it beat Columbia, 21-11. It is the most Rutgers has scored against Princeton since recordkeeping began in 1946. The previous high was 17 runs, accomplished twice, but most recently during the 2000 season.

The Scarlet Knights scored three in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Esposito and a two-run single by Cerulo. In the second, Rutgers added five more runs to take an 8-0 lead.

Graig Badger (Union, NJ) opened the second with a walk and, after stealing second, scored on a double to center by Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ). Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) followed with a single to third, putting runners on the corners, and Esposito laced a single to right, scoring Wolski for a 5-0 lead. After a pair of outs, Defendis drilled a three-run home run to right field, his third of the season and first since March 22 vs. Harvard, plating three more runs for an 8-0 lead.

Rutgers added four more in the third, using RBI doubles from Frazier and Esposito and an RBI single by Cerulo to plate three runs, while the fourth scored on a groundout. In the fourth, Rutgers sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven more times for a 19-0 lead. Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) delivered the biggest blow, clearing the bases with a three-run double, while Esposito (single), Defendis (sac fly) and Cerulo (triple) also drove in runs.

Rutgers added its final run in the ninth when Lee Moskowitz (Edison, NJ) tripled to right-center and scored on an error, Princeton’s third of the game.

Jansen (3-2) won for the second time in six days, blanking the Tigers over six innings. He allowed six hits and two walks, while striking out a career-high seven. Today’s effort, coupled with seven scoreless frames on Thursday at Wagner, extends his streak to 13 innings. Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ) pitched a perfect seventh, while OJ Dechristofano (Pequannock, NJ) struck out the side in the eighth on just 11 pitches. Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth.

Offensively, eight of RU’s nine starters collected hits, led by Cerulo, who was 3-for-4, and Wolski, who finished 3-for-3. Badger was the lone starter without a hit, but he reached base in five of seven plate appearances on four walks and an error and scored four times.

Rutgers returns to action tomorrow, when it hosts St. Peter’s at 3:30 p.m. at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex, ending a stretch of six-straight road games.
