  • STATEN ISLAND, NY - Sophomore Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) collected five of Rutgers’ 16 hits as the Scarlet Knights cruised past Wagner, 13-1, Thursday at Richmond County Stadium, home of the Staten Island Yankees. The victory, its second in three days over the Seahawks, improves Rutgers to 24-14 overall. Rodriguez, the starter at third base, went 5-for-6, with one run and two RBI to guide Rutgers to its 12th-staright win of the season.

Rutgers received the bulk of its runs from Rodriguez, Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ), who went 2-for-3, driving in three runs and Graig Badger (Union, NJ), who tallied two RBI.

Like the first game the two teams played earlier in the week, RU jumped out to an early lead and built on its margin. Rutgers capitalized on two Seahawk errors in the first inning to push through four runs. Following a leadoff walk to Badger, Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ) earned a pass to first base when he was hit by an offering from Wagner starter Ian Ryan. It marks the eighth time this season Wolski has reached base after being hit by a pitch. Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ), who had his 15-game hitting streak snapped today, reached on an error, scoring Badger. Consecutive singles by Rodriguez, Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ), who was 3-for-4 on the day, and Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY), playing in his home town, brought home the final three runs of the inning.

Following a scoreless second and third frame, the Scarlet Knights scored four more runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Normane ripped a double to left field, scoring Wolski and Frazier. Rodriguez followed Normane with a single through the left side to bring home Gaynor, who reached base with a walk, and Normane to make it 8-0.

Rutgers tallied three more runs in the sixth as RU capitalized on another Seahawk error to score its ninth run of the game and Badger slapped a single to left field to bring home Cerulo (single) and Defendis (error) and make it 11-0 at the end of six. Pinch hitter Alberto Vasquez’s (Jersey City, NJ) RBI double to left field and Wolski’s sacrifice fly to right field pushed through Rutgers’ final two runs of the game in the eighth.

Wagner responded with a run in the bottom half of the eighth, as Chris Dick knocked a single to right field to score Bryan Distefano, who led off the inning with a walk.

Freshman Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) picked up his second collegiate win (2-2), surrendering no runs and just two hits, while striking out five and walking five in seven scoreless innings of work. Bobby Acampora (Ocean Twp. NJ) pitched one inning of relief work in the eighth, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one, while Sean Atchison (Florham Park, NJ) struck out the side to close the door on the Seahawks in the ninth.

After a stretch of six games in five days, Rutgers will have a day to rest on Friday, before traveling to Storrs, CT, for a three-game BIG EAST series with Connecticut, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
