  • EASTON, PA – Senior Leon Shade (Montclair, NJ) entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as a defensive replacement, but it was his offense that provided the difference in Rutgers’ 10-7, come-from-behind, 10-inning victory over Lafayette this afternoon. Shade was 2-for-2 with a walk, three RBI and three runs scored as Rutgers rebounded from a 6-1 deficit for its 11th-straight victory in a game that featured 24 hits, 12 errors and took 3:25 to complete. Rutgers is now 23-14 overall.

Trailing 6-2, Shade walked to lead off the seventh inning, igniting a two-run rally that cut the gap to 6-4. In the eighth, following a single by Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) and a double by Alberto Vasquez (Jersey City, NJ), Shade ripped a single to left field, scoring both runs. He then scored on a throwing error to give Rutgers its first lead, 7-6. Lafayette tied the game in the bottom half of the eighth, but Shade played the role of hero again in extra innings, lining a single up the middle past a drawn-in field to score Vasquez (leadoff walk), putting Rutgers on top for good. Rutgers added two more insurance runs in the 10th inning to make it 10-7.

Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) earned his first collegiate win (1-2), pitching two innings of perfect relief, striking out two. The Scarlet Knights also received strong middle relief pitching from Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ), surrendering just one run on four hits, while striking out one in 2.2 innings of work.

Rutgers scored once in the first, whenGraig Badger (Union, NJ) reached on an infield error to open the game and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ). The Leopards scored five of their own in the bottom of the inning against RU starter Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ) and maintained its 5-1 lead until the third, when it tacked on another to increase the margin to 6-1.

A solo home run with one out in the sixth by Normane, his fifth of the year, closed the gap to 6-2 before Shade carried the team over the final four innings of play. In addition to Shade, Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ), Normane and Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) collected two hits apiece., while Grose and Wolski checked in with two RBI.

Rutgers returns to action tomorrow, when it travels to Staten Island to face Wagner at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at RBCK Ballpark at St. George, home of the Class A Staten Island Yankees.
