  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Sophomore Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) drilled a third-inning grand slam and Lee Moskowitz (Edison, NJ) added a grand slam of his own in the seventh to propel Rutgers past Pace, 18-3, today at the Class of ’53 Complex. RU starter Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ) allowed just one earned run over 6.0 innings and received outstanding offensive support to improve to 3-1. In addition to Frazier and Moskowitz’s blasts, Graig Badger (Union, NJ) was 4-for-4 to lead the 20-hit attack. With the win, Rutgers is now 18-14 overall, while Pace falls to 7-29. Rutgers has also outscored Pace, 39-5, in the last two meetings.

After Pace scored a quick run in the top of the first, Rutgers responded with five in the bottom of the inning and cruised the rest of the way. Badger led off with a single and scored on a triple by Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ), who then scored on a double from Frazier. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) singled to center, plating Frazier, and Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) delivered a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 4-1. A fielder’s choice from Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ) then scored the fifth and final run of the inning.

Pace scored twice in the second to cut the lead to 6-3, but Rutgers responded once again, plating five runs in the third. Bionde drove in the first run with a single through the left side and, three batters later, Frazier unloaded for his fourth home run, and first grand slam of the season. Rutgers scored two more in the sixth when Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ) led off with a double and scored on a triple by Defendis, who then scored on an RBI groundout by Moskowitz.

In the seventh, Rutgers scored five more on an RBI single from Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) and Moskowitz’s grand slam, his second home run of the season.

Malafronte (3-1) ended his stint with four scoreless innings, while Bobby Acampora (Ocean Twp., NJ), Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) and Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) added a shutout inning of relief each. In addition to Badger’s four hits, Frazier, Wolski and Defendis added two each.

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Virginia Tech in a key BIG EAST doubleheader at 12 noon. The two teams will then meet for a single game on Sunday, also at 12 noon.
