  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – After splitting a doubleheader yesterday and scoring just six runs in the two contests, the Rutgers University baseball team scored 10 runs and received a quality start from sophomore Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) to defeat Seton Hall, 10-4, in the rubber game this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. Senior Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense, which banged out 12 hits. With the win, Rutgers improves to 12-13 overall and 6-3 in BIG EAST play, a half-game behind St. John’s for fourth place in the conference.

Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead in the first on a triple by Anthony Seratelli and a two-out single from Tim Pahuta, but Rutgers struck back for two in the bottom of the frame to grab the lead, which it kept for the remainder of the game. Graig Badger (Union, NJ) led off with a single to right-center, moved to second on a balk and scored on a one-out single by Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ). Wolski then moved over to third on an infield throwing error by Pahuta and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to deep left by Normane.

In the second, Rutgers added another run when Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) walked, stole second and later scored on a passed ball. The Scarlet Knights then broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, taking a 7-1 lead.

Alberto Vasquez (Jersey City, NJ) led off with a single and moved over to second on a sacrifice by Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ). Badger then delivered Vasquez with a single and after a walk to Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ), Wolski lined out to right, driving in another run. Following a walk to Vinny Esposito (Middletown, NJ), Badger and Grose scored on wild pitches and Normane doubled to left, plating Esposito.

After the first inning run, Kalb cruised through the middle innings, retiring the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Scarlet Knights added another in the sixth when Defendis doubled to right and scored on a single by Vasquez, increasing the lead to 8-1.

Kalb tired in the seventh, allowing two runs, before giving way to OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ). DeChristofano forced in another run with a bases-loaded walk, closing the lead to 8-4, before striking out Lou Santangelo with the bases loaded to end the inning. Senior Sean Atchison (Florham Park, NJ) then pitched the last two innings, allowing one hit and no runs, while striking out three. Meanwhile, Rutgers tacked on two more runs in the seventh on bases-loaded walks to Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) and Defendis to finish the scoring.

Kalb (1-1) allowed six hits and four runs in 6.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out five. He also retired 10 in a row at one point and took an 8-1 lead into the seventh inning. Badger, Wolski, Normane, Vasquez and Bionde each collected two hits.

Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday with a non-league game vs. Columbia at 3:00 p.m. at the Class of ’53 Complex.
