  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – After 22-straight games on the road, sophomore Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) opened the 2003 home schedule with a complete-game one-hitter to lead Rutgers to a 5-1 win over Seton Hall this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Complex. The win proved pivotal, as Rutgers fell in the second game, 2-1. With the split, Rutgers is now 11-13 overall and 5-3 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall moves to 12-14, 5-6.

Egbert, who faced just one hitter over the minimum, and SHU starter Mark Irwin matched scoreless frames in the first inning, but Casey Grimm ripped an Egbert offering over the fence in right-center with one out in the second to stake the Pirates to a 1-0 lead. Irwin, meanwhile, took a no-hitter into the fourth until Matt Wolski (Hamilton, NJ) singled off Irwin’s glove to collect his 200th career hit. With 201 hits at the end of the day, Wolski is now tied with current assistant coach Glen Gardner for seventh place on the all-time hits list.

Wolski’s milestone hit started a rally that allowed Rutgers to tie the game as he moved over to third on a single to right-center by Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) and scored on a groundout by Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ). With runners at the corners, Cerulo hit a hard-chopper to third but beat the throw to first.

In the fifth, Rutgers broke the game open with four runs. Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ) singled through the left side and moved to second on a wild pitch. With first base open, Seton Hall elected to intentionally walk Graig Badger (Union, NJ) to set up a force play, but Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. At that point, Irwin issued back-to-back, bases-loaded walks to Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) and Vinny Esposito (Middletown, NJ) to give Rutgers a 3-1 lead. After a pitching change, Wolski greeted Chris Noonan with a bloop single to center, scoring Grose, while Frazier came across when Mike Bascom mishandled the ball.

Given a four-run lead, Egbert cruised, allowing just a walk in the sixth which was quickly erased by a 6-4-3 double play. In the seventh, Egbert ended the game with a flourish, striking out Anthony Seratelli, Lou Santangelo and Tim Pahuta to end the game and improve to 3-0 in BIG EAST play and 4-3 overall. He faced just 22 hitters, allowed one hit, walked three and struck out a career-high eight hitters. He threw 99 pitches in the seven-inning contest and received outstanding defensive help from Esposito, who turned a key 5-4-3 double play in the fourth and Alberto Vasquez (Jersey City, NJ), who threw out a base stealer in the first.

In the second game, Seton Hall’s Elvis Quezada (6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R) outdueled RU starter Shaun Parker (Westampton, NJ) in a 2-1 win. Parker worked 7.0 innings and allowed just two hits and two runs (one earned), but the Scarlet Knights’ offense mustered just five hits, including a solo home run by Normane.

SHU scored a single run in the third when Patrick Sullivan reached on an infield error, moved to second and third on wild pitches and scored on an RBI groundout by Seratelli. In the fourth, SHU added another when Matt Cuttruff doubled to left-center and scored on a double by Santiago Chi.

Rutgers broke the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Normane homered down the right-field line, his fourth of the season, and threatened for more when Vasquez reached on a two-base error. After a pitching change, Noonan retired the next two hitters to avoid further damage.

In the eighth, a tiring Parker threw eight-straight balls, walking Santangelo and Pahuta to end his day. Sean Atchison (Florham Park, NJ) kept the Scarlet Knights within striking distance by recording a pair of strikeouts in the eighth and ninth innings, both hitless frames for the senior lefty. Rutgers, however, could only muster a one-out single in the ninth by Normane, who had four of RU’s five hits in the game, before Noonan shut the door for his seventh save.

The two teams will close out the annual series with a single game tomorrow at 12:00 noon. Seton Hall will send Buddy Hausmann to the mound, while Rutgers is expected to counter with either Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) or Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ).
