  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Seton Hall freshman Dan McDonald took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Pirates beat Rutgers, 8-1, in the season finale for both teams. A two-out, RBI single from Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, NJ) in the ninth helped the Scarlet Knights avoid the shutout, but Seton Hall scored twice in the third and three more times in the fourth to roll to victory. Rutgers finishes the 2005 season with a 32-21 overall record, including a 12-12 mark in BE play.

RU starter OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one jam in the first and a second-and-third, one-out jam in the second, but Seton Hall reached him for a pair of runs in the third on Brandon Cohen’s fielder’s choice and Dan Doyle’s bases-loaded walk. DeChristofano then left the game with a leg injury and Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NY) left the bases loaded with a strikeout and fly-out to end the inning.

The Pirates struck for three in the fourth, however, on Tim Pahuta’s RBI double, while a two-out throwing error by Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) allowed two unearned runs to eventually score. Another run scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, increasing SHU’s lead to 6-0.

Rutgers, meanwhile, failed to collect a hit through the first six innings as McDonald averted a bases-loaded (all walks) situation in the third by inducing an inning-ending double play from Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ). McDonald then retired 11 of the next 12 hitters, allowing just a two-out walk in the sixth, before Dave Williams (Franklin Twp., NJ) broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right, which fell just in front of a diving Cohen.

Trailing 8-0, Gossard’s single scored Williams (one-out walk) with the Scarlet Knights’ lone run.

DeChristofano (4-5) suffered the loss, allowing four hits, five walks and two runs in 2.1 innings. McDonald (5-5) worked 7.0 innings and allowed just one hit, walked five, and struck out six. He was also 3-for-5 at the plate with a walk.
