  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Back-to-back home runs from Dave Williams (Franklin Twp., NJ) and Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) lifted Rutgers to an 8-4 win in the opener, as Rutgers (32-20, 12-11 BIG EAST) split a doubleheader today with Seton Hall, which rallied for eight runs over the final two innings to win the second game, 10-4. Unfortunately for Rutgers, Notre Dame completed its series sweep of West Virginia with a 7-3 win, thus clinching the fourth and final spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Trailing 4-3 in the sixth inning of a back-and-forth opening tilt, Williams led off the inning with a line drive home run to left, his sixth HR of the season, to tie the game. SHU then made a pitching change and Hook greeted reliever Michael Young with a home run to right-center on the first pitch thrown, putting the Scarlet Knights ahead and triggering a five-run inning. Following the back-to-back blasts, Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) delivered RBI singles, while Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) scored Grose with a sacrifice fly. Working with a comfortable lead, RU starter Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) struck out the side in the top of the seventh to improve to 5-2 this season.

SHU strung together three-straight hits in the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Rutgers scored in the bottom half when Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) led off with a single, raced all the way to third on Grose’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Gaynor’s groundout. The Pirates scored two more in the third on Tim Pahuta’s two-run homer, but Gaynor ripped a solo shot in the fourth and Defendis doubled and scored on Hook’s sacrifice to tie the game.

Kalb (7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 8 K) picked up the win, while Gaynor (2-for-3, 3 RBI) led offensively in the opener.

In the second game, the Scarlet Knights used first-inning walks to Frazier and Grose to push across two runs, as Defendis’ line drive exploded in front of SHU shortstop Mike Pappas, scoring both runners. Two innings later, Grose led off with a double and Gaynor walked for Defendis, who singled home Grose, while Williams’ sacrifice fly scored Gaynor two batters later.

SHU nicked RU starter Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ) for a run in the fourth on Dan Doyle’s sacrifice fly, which scored Brandon Cohen (leadoff single) and did not score again until the eighth, when the Rutgers bullpen yielded three hits, a walk and four runs. Holt walked Anthony Seratelli to open the inning, which brought Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) into the game. Pustay faced four batters, allowing a single, a two-run double, walk and sacrifice bunt, as all three of his runners scored. It was more of the same in the ninth, when Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ) allowed a leadoff walk, followed by Hook’s infield error, before turning the ball over to Grose, who struck out McDonald but hit a batter, walked in a run and allowed a two-run single to Cohen. Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NY) relieved Grose, but gave up back-to-back singles, scoring another run, before inducing a pair of popups to end the inning.

Holt pitched 7.0 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs, leaving the game with a 4-2 lead less than one week after suffering a 2-1 loss at Georgetown – a game in which he carried a shutout into the eighth inning. Defendis led RU with a 2-for-4, 3 RBI effort.

RU completes its season with a noon game tomorrow. Six seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game.
