  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Trailing 8-5 with one out in the eighth, junior Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) hit a bases-loaded triple to tie the game and freshman Frank Meade (Linden, NJ) followed with a single to give RU a 9-8 lead on its way to an 11-9, comeback win over Fordham this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. Rutgers (30-19) trailed 8-0 through six innings, but scored 11 times in its final two at bats to secure its 30th win of the season, the eighth-straight year of 30 wins under head coach Fred Hill. Fordham is now 33-19.

Trailing 8-0, Rutgers scored three times in the seventh inning, using a pair of errors to push across its runs. Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) led off the inning with a sharp groundball to third, but the throw pulled Fordham first baseman Jeremy Bourgeois off the bag. Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) then walked and Dave Williams (Franklin Twp., NJ) reached on another error, this time a bobble by Fordham shortstop Rich Goulian, which scored Defendis with the Scarlet Knights’ first run. Hook singled through the right side, loading the bases for Meade, who grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, allowing Rodriguez to score and Williams to move over to third. Williams then came home on a wild pitch with pinch-hitter Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) at the plate.

After a scoreless top half of the eighth, RU sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game. Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) led off with a crisp single to left and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ), who retired the final batter of the eighth inning, hit a tailor-made double play ball to short, which was once again mishandled, putting runners on first and second for Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ), who singled through the left side to load the bases. Defendis ripped a line drive to right, which was caught for the first out, but Rodriguez walked to force in a run and cut the lead to 8-4. Williams was then hit by a pitch, closing the gap to 8-5 before Hook erased the lead with his triple to the gap in left-center. Tied at 8-8, Fordham decided to bring its infield in and Meade stung a single through the left side to score Hook for a 9-8 lead.

A single from Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) kept the inning alive and Frazier followed with his second hit of the inning, although Meade was thrown out at home trying to score. Grose then hit a slow roller to second, which was misplayed then thrown away, allowing both Grover and Frazier to score for some much-needed breathing room and an 11-8 lead. Bourgeois led off the ninth with a double to left-center, the first hit off Grose in four appearances this season and he eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Grose (1-0) then retired the next two hitters for his first win of the season.

Fordham struck for four runs in the first against RU starter Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ), highlighted by Bourgeois’ two-run home run. The Rams added a single run in the fourth and another in the fifth on an inside-the-park homerun, as Defendis and Williams collided while diving in right-center attempting to make the catch. In the seventh, a one-out error by Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) led to two unearned runs, spoiling an otherwise strong outing by reliever Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) and giving Fordham its 8-0 lead. Bobby Acampora (Ocean Twp., NJ) provided a strong inning of shutout relief and Grose finished off the game, allowing one run in 1.1 innings of work.

Frazier, Hook and Meade finished with two hits apiece, as Meade reached base in three of four plate appearances and drove in the go-ahead run.

RU returns to action tomorrow when it hosts St. Peter’s at 3:30 p.m.
