  • ROCKVILLE, MD – Junior OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) allowed just two hits and one run in 7.0 innings and Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) scored in the first and hit a two-run homer in the second as Rutgers defeated Georgetown, 5-2, in the series finale this afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, RU is now 29-19 overall and 11-10 in BIG EAST play.

A walk to Frazier and a single from Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) pushed across the game’s first run in the opening inning, while Frazier’s two-out, two-run homer in the second, his ninth of the season, increased the lead to 3-0. After cruising through the first three innings, DeChristofano ran into a jam in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs on a pair of walks and an infield single. After striking out Drew Dargen, DeChristofano walked in a run, but Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) snared a line drive at first with a dive and doubled off the runner to end the inning and keep RU’s 3-1 lead intact.

Rutgers picked up another run in the top of the fifth as Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) led off with a walk and Dave Williams (Franklin Twp., NJ) singled to left with one out. Hook then grounded hard to first and Williams was forced at second, but the relay throw back to first sailed high, allowing Defendis to score on the throwing error for a 4-1 lead. RU then added another in the top of the seventh when Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) walked, moved to second on Williams’ sacrifice, and scored on Hook’s double down the line in right.

Georgetown pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth, using a pair of singles and an infield error to score, but Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ), who worked the final two innings, left runners stranded at second and third by inducing a foul popup from pinch-hitter Ryan Craft.

DeChristofano (4-3) picked up his first win since March 26, spanning five starts. He walked six and struck out five. Malafronte pitched the final two innings, striking out three to preserve the win. Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) and Rodriguez had two hits apiece.

Following the weekend action, Rutgers sits in fifth place in the BIG EAST standings entering the final series. Rutgers will host Seton Hall in a three-game series on Friday (DH) and Saturday (single game), with action beginning at noon on both days.
