  • ROCKVILLE, MD – After rallying for an extra-inning, 8-7 win in the opener, seeing its 7-2 lead disappear in the final inning, Rutgers held a 1-0 lead into the eighth in the nightcap, before a two-run home run gave the Hoyas a 2-1 victory and split of today’s doubleheader, played at Shirley Povich Field. RU received a pair of strong pitching performances from its starters, Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) and Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ), but bullpen trouble in the opener forced extra innings and a lack of offense in the second game doomed the Scarlet Knights, who moved to 28-19 overall and 10-10 in BIG EAST play following today’s split.

After building a 7-2 lead heading into the final inning in game one, Rutgers surrendered five runs, including a two-out, two-run single on a 1-2 count, as Georgetown tied the game and forced extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) singled with out and moved over to third on a double from Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ), the key hit in the inning. Dave Williams (Franklin Twp., NJ) was intentionally walked to load the bases and, after a pitching change, Mark Dutmers hit Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) with his first pitch, forcing in the go-ahead run. Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NJ) then pitched a scoreless inning to pick up the win, improving to 3-1.

Rutgers built a quick 3-0 lead, using five straight singles to open the game. Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) hit the first pitch of the game up the middle and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) bunted his way on, with Frazier racing to third on the play. Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) then singled to short, scoring Frazier, and a single from Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) loaded the bases for Rodriguez, who punched a ball through the right side to score Grose. Williams then walked to force in the third run of the inning. In the bottom of the second, Defendis homered to straight-away center for a 5-0 lead, scoring Gaynor, who had singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. Grose singled home two more in the sixth to extend RU’s lead to 7-2, before the Hoyas scored five times against three RU relievers, the big blow being Jim Supple’s two-run single off Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ). The bullpen’s ineffectiveness spoiled a strong starting effort from Kalb, who allowed just five hits and two runs in 6.0 innings.

In the second game, Gaynor hit a solo home run in the fourth and Holt took a shutout into the eighth, but Georgetown’s Timmy Jones hit a two-run home run to lift the Hoyas to victory. Rutgers mustered just six hits in the game against GU freshman Tom Gaggioli, failed to convert a first and third, no-out situation in the seventh and had the potential tying run thrown out on a steal attempt in the ninth.

Defendis continued his hot hitting, picking up five hits in eight at bats in the doubleheader, including a home run and double. Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ), Gaynor , Grose and Rodriguez each collected three hits.

The series’ final game will take place tomorrow at 12:00, with OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) scheduled to start for Rutgers, opposite Georgetown’s Thomas Braun.
