  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) hurled eight strong innings, allowing just three runs, to pick up his team-leading fifth victory and classmate Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) drove in four runs, including his third home run in as many games, as Rutgers (26-18) defeated Delaware (21-26), 14-4, this afternoon. RU scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings on the way to its third-straight win, while senior Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) collected two hits to extend his streak to 18 games.

Following a 1-2-3 first from Jansen, Rutgers went to work quickly as Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) walked and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) doubled to put runners in scoring position with no outs. A walk to Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) loaded the bases before a wild pitch scored Frazier with the game’s first run and Rodriguez’ groundout produced another. RU tacked on three more in the second on a wild pitch, sac fly from Frazier and Gaynor’s RBI double for a 5-0 lead.

Delaware used a leadoff walk and three-straight hits to plate three runs in the third and cut the lead to two, 5-3, but would not score the rest of the way against Jansen, who left the game in the ninth with a 14-3 lead. RU added two more in the bottom half of the third on an RBI double by Hook and a groundout by Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) and two more in the fourth, on a Rodriguez single and Hook’s sacrifice fly. Leading 9-3, the Scarlet Knights pushed across two more in the fifth as Querns (single) and Frazier (walk) reached to open the inning and scored on a pair of infield groundouts by Gaynor and Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY).

After two scoreless innings, RU finished things off with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by Hook’s opposite-field, two-run blast. He has now homered in each of RU’s last three games and has eight this season, tying Frazier for the team lead. (Hook is now 5-for-11 with 8 RBI in his last three games.) Frank Meade (Linden, NJ) followed Hook with a double to the fence in right-center and later scored on a wild pitch.

Jansen (5-1) struck out two and walked two in his eight innings of work, handing the ball to Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NY), who allowed a harmless run in the ninth and ended the game with a strikeout. Five different Rutgers players – Gaynor, Rodriguez, Hook, Meade and Querns – chipped in two hits apiece, as the 7-8-9 hitters in the lineup (Hook, Meade and Querns) combined for six hits in 12 at bats with five runs scored and five RBI. RU also walked 10 times in the game, including three each by Frazier and Grose, the Scarlet Knights’ 1-2 hitters.

Rutgers is back in action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., when it hosts Monmouth. Rutgers beat Monmouth, 9-8, earlier in the season (April 6) in West Long Branch.
