  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Down 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, the Rutgers baseball team scored three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and exploded for eight runs in the sixth to earn a 14-7 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Tuesday afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex in Piscataway. Rutgers improves to 24-18 with the victory, while FDU falls to 11-21.

Every starter got a hit and brought home at least one run, led by freshman Ryan Hill’s (Hillsdale, NJ) 3-for-4 effort.

FDU scored a single run in the second and built a 3-0 lead with two runs in the fourth. FDU threatened for more in the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs but Rutgers starter Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) got leadoff hitter Chris Grabowski to ground out to short to end the inning.

The Scarlet Knights countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie it up. Junior Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) drilled a two-run home run over the right-field fence, bringing home David Williams (Franklin, NJ), who reached on an error in the previous at bat. Freshman Frank Meade (Linden, NJ) was hit by a pitch in the next at bat and moved to third base on a pair of wild pitches. He later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of freshman Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ).

Senior Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) gave Rutgers its first lead of the game with a home run to left field to lead off the fifth inning. Later in the inning, Williams smacked a hard single just past the shortstop’s glove, moving Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ), who reached base on a walk, to third. Rodriguez scored two pitches later on FDU starter Steven Aiello’s third wild pitch in two innings to give RU a 5-3 lead after five innings.

FDU’s Ed Watson drilled a two-out RBI single past Frazier at short to cut the Scarlet Knights’ lead to one run at 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth.

New FDU pitcher Phil Culotta started the sixth but lasted just two thirds of an inning, giving up six runs on two hits and four walks. Nine-spot hitter Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) drew a leadoff walk and Frazier followed with a perfectly-executed bunt to third base, beating out the throw to first for the infield single. Hill then walked to load the bases. Culotta got Gaynor to foul out but then walked cleanup hitter Johnny Defendis (Staten Island,
NY) to bring home the first of eight runs in the inning. Rodriguez belted an RBI single to left field, plating Frazier. Williams followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home the third run of the inning.

Cullota issued his fourth walk of the inning to reload the bases, signaling the end of his day. Meade greeted new pitcher Tim Bonham with a two-RBI single to center field. Grover, batting for the second time in the inning, doubled to center field, scoring Hook from second base. Frazier then reached on an error, allowing two more runs to give the Scarlet Knights a commanding
    13-4 lead through six innings.

Sophomore Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) replaced Jansen to begin the eighth inning. FDU tried to climb back in the game with three runs in the eighth to cut the RU lead to 13-7. Gary Manuzza led off the inning with a single to the gap in left center. Anthony Ventola brought home FDU’s fifth run of the game with an RBI double to left field. FDU brought two more runs in with back-to-back two-out singles, ending Lillis’ day. Freshman Mark Lampariello (Annondale, NJ) was brought in to close out the game.

Rutgers added another run in the bottom of the eighth after Frazier drilled a two-out double down the left-field line, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Hill single to right field.

Jansen worked seven innings for his fourth victory of the season, allowing four runs on six hits, walking five and striking out two batters. Lillis allowed three runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning, striking out one batter and Lampariello closed it out with 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out one batter.

Aiello was dealt his second loss of the season, allowing five runs on five hits, walking four and striking out one batter in five innings of work.
Bonham replaced Cullota in the sixth, working the final 2.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out one batter.

The Scarlet Knights will be home again tomorrow, when they host Wagner at 1:00 p.m.
