  • EASTON, PA – Lafayette scored a single run in the bottom of the second, but Rutgers responded with seven third-inning runs, all with two outs, on its way to a 17-1 win this afternoon at Rahn Field.

Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, NJ), who finished the day 3-for-3, had two hits in the inning including an RBI double, while Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) and Dave Williams (Franklin, NJ) each drove in two runs during the frame. RU also scored two in the sixth on a double from Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ), who was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and added six in the seventh, highlighted by the eighth home run of the season from Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ), which ties the school record for home runs by a leadoff hitter.

RU starter Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) worked seven strong innings, allowing just five hits and one run, to earn his third win this season, while Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) made his first mound appearance of the year, striking out two to finish it off in the ninth. Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) led RU with a 4-for-4, 3-double effort, crossing home four times, helping the Scarlet Knights improve to 22-16 overall.

Gossard opened the second with a seeing-eye single and, with two outs, a walk to Gaynor loaded the bases for Defendis, who dumped a single into right to score two runs. Rodriguez then followed with an RBI single to center, and Williams drove a two-run double off the fence in left for a 5-1 lead. Williams then scored on a wild pitch, increasing the lead to 6-1, while Gossard doubled home Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) to complete the scoring.

In the sixth, RU added two more with two outs on a single from Defendis and Rodriguez’s double to right and, an inning later, the Scarlet Knights added six more. Frazier drilled a three-run home run just over the 403-foot sign in center field for his eighth blast of the season, tying David DeJesus (2000) for the most home runs by a leadoff hitter. Donny Callahan (Sparta, NJ) delivered a sacrifice fly and Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) and Rodriguez doubled home the remaining runs. Two more scored in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk and a double from Vic Cegles (Phoenix, AZ).

Jansen (3-1) allowed five hits and one run, striking out five, while OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) worked a scoreless eighth and Grose worked the ninth, striking out two. Eight of RU’s nine starters hit safely in the game, while seven had multiple hits.

RU returns to action this weekend, when it travels to face BIG EAST-leading St. John’s in a three-game series. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at noon.
