  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Connecticut scored in seven of nine innings, including five in the fourth and six in the seventh, and banged out 21 hits today to defeat Rutgers, 18-6, in the series finale at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. Rutgers held a brief 3-1 lead in the second inning when Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, NJ) drilled a three-run home run, but the Scarlet Knights failed to keep pace with the Huskies the rest of the way. With the loss, RU is now 21-16 overall and 8-7 in BIG EAST play.

Russ D’Argento hit the first of four Connecticut home runs to open the scoring in the first, lining a shot down the line in left for a 1-0 UC lead. In the second, the Scarlet Knights rallied when Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) singled and Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) walked to set the table for Gossard, who lined his first home run of the season over the fence in left for a 3-1 lead. That lead was short-lived, however, as Connecticut scored once in the third and then added five more in the fourth, including a two-run shot by nine-spot hitter Pat Mahoney, off RU starter Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ), who suffered his first loss of the season (3.2 IP, 9 H, 7 R).

Trailing 8-3, RU fought back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Gossard started the rally with a double and scored on a single from Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ), while Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) and Frazier scored on a Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) single and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) double, respectively. RU had runners on second and third with one out, but the inning came to an end when Defendis’ shallow flyball was caught for the second out and Grose was gunned down at the plate trying to score.

Connecticut then added six two in the sixth and four more in the seventh, the big blow being a grand slam from Jeff Hourigan (3-for-5, 6 RBI) off RU reliever Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ).

Rutgers will be back in action on Wednesday, when it travels to Lafayette for a non-league game at 3:30 p.m.
