  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers Baseball team dropped a pair of games to Boston College this afternoon, losing the opener, 6-4, and the second game, 15-0, at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. With the losses, RU is now 18-14 overall and 6-5 in BIG EAST play, while BC is 23-10, 9-3 BE. RU has also lost three straight and five of its last six.

In the opener, BC’s Mike Wlodarczyk held RU in check through the first three innings, as BC built a 2-0 lead against RU starter Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) on Drew Locke’s RBI double in the first and Jason Delaney’s RBI single in the third. The Scarlet Knights, however, rallied for two in the fourth to tie it, as Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) led off with a solo home run and Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to score Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, NJ), who was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double by Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ).

The Eagles came back with three in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, highlighted by Locke’s two-run blast and RU cut it to 5-4 in the bottom half when Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) hit a two-run homer of his own. BC scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh and Wlodarczyk weathered a double from Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) in the seventh to hold on for the win.

RU received a strong relief effort from sophomore Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ), who was making just his second appearance since the 2003 season. Lillis worked 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit, one run and one walk.

In the nightcap, three RU errors in the third inning led to four unearned runs and began a slide that continued through the middle innings. Trailing 4-0, RU starter OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) gave up three more in the fourth as BC built a 7-0 lead and added six more in the seventh off three RU relievers. RU’s offense, meanwhile, mustered just four singles off Seton Hall Prep product Joe Martinez, who improved to 5-2 with the complete-game win. BC collected 15 hits (14 singles) in the game, as six of the nine starters had two. Shawn McGill and Jonny Weiss each drove in three runs.

The Rutgers lineup, which struck out 20 times this afternoon, saw just two players – Frazier and Rodriguez – hit safely in both games.

The two teams conclude the series with a single game tomorrow at noon. Sophomore Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ) will start for the Scarlet Knights, likely opposed by BC’s Nate Jeanes (2-2, 2.11)
