  • MORGANTOWN, WV – Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) drove in four runs, Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) collected three hits, including two doubles, and Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) pitched five strong innings to lift Rutgers to an 11-3, game one win over West Virginia this afternoon at Hawley Field. In the second game, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 7-0 lead en route to a 12-3 win, as RU scored all of its runs on three-run home run from Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) in the fifth. With the split, RU moves to 17-10 overall and 6-2 in BIG EAST play, while WVU is now 13-19, 3-6 BE.

“I thought we swung the bats really well in the opener, but we walked too many guys in the second game and it came back to hurt us,” said RU coach Fred Hill. “West Virginia got an early lead and we had some chances to get back into it, aggressive in the second but we didn’t get the hits when we needed them.”

In the opener, Rutgers sent 13 men to the plate in the sixth, scoring seven runs, to break open a 3-2 game. Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) opened with a single and moved over to second on a bunt single from Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY). With one out, Hill ripped his third hit of the game, a single to center, which scored Canuso. Then with two outs, WVU starter Chris Amedro walked nine-spot hitter Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) to load the bases and paid dearly, as Frazier singled in two runs and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) followed with an RBI double, extending the lead to 7-2, ending Amedro’s day (5.2 IP, 11 H, 10 R). WVU head coach Greg Van Zandt’s call to the bullpen resulted in three more runs, as Mark Wyner walked Canuso, Defendis and Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) to complete the scoring.

Rutgers snapped a scoreless tie with a three-run fifth, as Hill and Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) opened with a single and double to put two runners in scoring position for Grover, who drove in Hill with a groundout and Frazier, who doubled to right to score Hook. Grose then singled to center, plating Frazier for a 3-0 lead. WVU cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning on Trent Ridgley’s home run and added another in the seventh on Justin Jenkins’ solo blast.

Kalb (4-1) worked into the sixth inning, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out three.

In the second game, WVU scored four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead, using a pair of bases-loaded walks and . RU cut the lead to four, 7-3, on Canuso’s three-run HR in the fifth, but the Scarlet Knights left the bases loaded in the sixth and two on in the seventh in their attempt to draw closer. WVU extended its lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh on Wes Nelms’ two-out, RBI single and added four more in the ninth.

Rutgers received a strong relief effort from Bobby Acampora (Ocean Twp., NJ), who allowed just one run in 3.1 innings of work, keeping the Scarlet Knights in the game. Sophomore Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ), who underwent Tommy John surgery following the 2003 season and suffered a broken foot prior to the start of the 2005 season, pitched for the first time since the 2003 NCAA Tournament but failed to record an out in the ninth, allowing four runs.

OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) lasted just 2.1 innings and suffered the loss, falling to 3-2.

Rutgers and WVU will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday at noon. Sophomore Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ) will make his third start of the season, while WVU’s starter has not been announced.
