  • MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Leading 7-3 heading into the ninth, Rutgers survived a late Minnesota rally and held on for a 7-6 win, sweeping three games from the defending Big Ten Champions. Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) led RU offensively with four hits, two runs and an RBI, finishing the weekend 10-for-21. Sophomore Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ) picked up his first collegiate victory in his first collegiate start, allowing two runs in 5.1 strong innings before Ryan Bradley (Overland Park, KS) preserved the win by recording the final three outs. With the win, RU is now 9-7, while UM falls to 4-10.

Scoreless into the third, Rutgers broke through for a pair of runs as Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) led off with a double to left, moved over to third on a sacrifice by Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) and scored when Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) grounded to third, as Frazier beat the throw to the plate for the game’ first run. With Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ), who had walked, on second, Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) dumped a single into left, scoring Gaynor for a 2-0 lead. Rutgers then added another run in the third on Grose’s two-out single, which scored Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) for a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth, Rutgers added another run when Defendis and Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) each triple to right-center and left-center, respectively, expanding the lead to 4-1. Minnesota added another run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Matt Fornasiere and threatened for more by putting runners at the corners with two outs on back-to-back singles from Mike Mee and Andy Hunter. With Jake Elder, arguably the Gophers’ top hitter, at the plate, catcher Frank Meade (Linden, NJ) alertly picked Hunter off first to end the threat and keep the RU lead at 4-2.

Minnesota mounted a rally in the sixth, putting runners at the corners on back-to-back singles off Holt, which prompted a pitching change for the Scarlet Knights. Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NY) entered the game and coaxed a 6-4-3 double play from Tony Leseman end the inning. He allowed one run in 2.1 innings of relief work.

In the top of the seventh, Defendis and Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) opened with back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners and, with one out, executed a perfect double steal for a 5-2 lead. With Rodriguez on second, pinch-hitter Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) lashed a one-out triple to right, increasing the lead to 6-2.

Leading 7-3 in the ninth, RU closer Tim Woodhull (Princeton Jct., NJ) allowed a walk, single and three-run home run to Fornasiere, which cut the lead to 7-6. Hill then summoned Bradley, who allowed a walk and a single, but retired the next three hitters for his first save of the season.

Holt (1-0) lasted into the sixth, allowing eight hits and two runs, walking two and striking out two. Defendis was 4-for-5 and finished the weekend with 10 hits in 21 at bats, raising his average from .316 to .384. Canuso and Rodriguez, who is now hitting .403, added two hits apiece, while Hill knocked in a pair.

Rutgers, which has played eight games in the last 10 days, will be idle for the next three days before opening BIG EAST play at Villanova on Thursday with a noon doubleheader.
