  • MIAMI, FL – A trio of lefties limited Rutgers to just three hits through seven innings as No. 5 Miami beat the Scarlet Knights, 13-2, tonight at Mark Light Stadium in the only meeting between the two teams this season. RU starter Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, to suffer his first loss of the season. With the loss, Rutgers dips to below .500 for the first time this season at 6-7, while Miami improves to 18-4.

"It's tough to fall behind so early to a team like Miami," said RU head coach Fred Hill. "We need to work on getting ahead in games like this instead of always trying to fight back. I thought Aaron (Kalb) pitched better than it showed, but we haven't swung the bats well the last few games."

The Hurricanes started the scoring on a mammoth home run from Brendan Katin with one out in the second and then tacked on three more in the inning as Walter Diaz, Roger Tomas and Eddy Rodriguez loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back-to-back singles, the last two chopped off the dirt in front of home plate and into shallow left field. Leadoff hitter Danny Figueroa then chopped another over the left side of the infield, plating UM’s second run, and the final two crossed on a fielder’s choice to second and a single by Ryan Braun. In the fourth, Miami added three more runs, highlighted by a two-run single from John Jay, and another in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead through five innings.

Trailing 13-0, Rutgers scored twice in the eighth, as Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) led off with a pinch-hit single, moved to second when Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, NJ) was hit by a pitch, and scored on a double from Frank Meade (Linden, NJ), his first collegiate hit and RBI. Gossard then scored on a groundout by Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY).

Rutgers left the bases loaded in the first inning as David Williams (Franklin, NJ) fanned to end the Scarlet Knights’ early scoring threat. Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) led off the game with a single to left and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) and Defendis walked to load the bases. After that threat, Rutgers managed just one more hit against UM starter Brendan Camardese, who picked up his second win of the season with five shutout innings of work.

Rutgers leaves Florida with a 1-4 record and will open a three-game series at Minnesota on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CT) with junior OJ Dechristofano (Pequannock, NJ) (1-1, 9.88) scheduled to start.
