  • MIAMI, FL – After posting 20 hits and scoring 14 runs, both season highs, on Saturday, the Rutgers baseball team managed just four hits in a 9-0 Sunday loss to FIU at University Park. FIU starter Eli Villanueva went the distance and finished with 13 strikeouts, while Cody Jacobs supplied all the offense he needed with a pair of home runs and five RBI. RU is now 6-5, while FIU improved to 16-6.

“We ran into a very good pitcher today,” said RU head coach Fred Hill. “We didn’t take advantage of some scoring opportunities early in the game and FIU kept adding to their lead.”

Rutgers squandered some opportunities early, leaving Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) stranded at third in the first inning after he opened the game with a single, and Dave Williams (Franklin, NJ), who reached on a walk, stranded at second in the next inning. FIU, meanwhile, scored three in the bottom of the first against RU starter Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) on Nick Cadena’s two-run home run and a triple by Yahmed Yema.

Rutgers had a chance for a big inning in the third, loading the bases with one out as Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) reached on singles and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) walked to load the bases. Villanueva bounced back and induced a 5-4-3 double play with Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) at the plate to end the Scarlet Knights’ threat. In the fourth, Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) singled and Williams was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs, but Villanueva got another double play and his Golden Panther teammates struck for four more runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Jacobs’ three-run blast, for a 7-0 lead. Villanueva did not allow a hit the rest of the way, striking out the side in the fifth inning.

Pustay (1-2) allowed seven earned runs in 3.2 innings, while Bobby Acampora (Ocean Twp., NJ) allowed two in 2.1 innings of relief work. Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) pitched two scoreless innings to close out the ballgame.

Rutgers, idle on Monday, returns to action on Tuesday when it faces Florida Atlantic (12-5) in Boca Raton, FL. The Owls swept three games at Gardner Webb this weekend to open conference play.
