  • MIAMI, FL – Junior Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA), inserted into the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, hit a solo home run in his first at bat and a three-run blast in his second to lift Rutgers past FIU, 14-10, this afternoon at University Park. Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NJ), who pitched 2.2 innings last night, earned the win in relief with 3.2 shutout innings and helped his own cause with a ninth inning solo home run. The Scarlet Knights, who banged out a season-high 20 hits, snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 6-4, while FIU fell to 14-6.

Today’s game, dominated by offense, featured a total of 24 runs, 33 hits, nine walks and six hit batters. RU and FIU combined to leave 22 runners stranded on base and hit six home runs, five by the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers scored in eight of nine innings and scored multiple runs in four of those.

“Today was a total team effort,” said RU head coach Fred Hill. “No one quit on us today and we got some big hits in the later innings. We kept battling and Spicer came through for us in the end.”

The Scarlet Knights rallied from deficits three different times in the game, as FIU built a 3-1 lead in the first inning before RU tied the game, 4-4, with single runs in the first and second and a pair in the third. A leadoff by Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) to open the game was followed by a one-out single from Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) for a quick, 1-0, RU lead. Rutgers tacked on another in the second to cut the FIU lead to 3-2 on a two-out single from Frazier, who knocked in Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ). RU then tied the game at 4-4 in the third as Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) led off the inning with a solo home run and Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) walked with the bases loaded.

After allowing four runs through the first two innings, RU starter OJ Dechristofano (Pequannock, NJ) settled down, holding the Golden Panthers scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings. With DeChristofano holding FIU in check, RU added another in the fourth when Canuso doubled home Gaynor (walk) and two more in the sixth, highlighted by a triple from Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) and a sacrifice fly by David Williams (Franklin, NJ), which extended the RU lead to 7-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

FIU, after three scoreless frames, went back to work in the sixth, scoring six times to take a 10-7 lead on Yahmed Yema’s grand slam and Cody Jacobs’ two-run single. Rutgers cut the lead to 10-8 on the first of Hook’s home runs and, an inning later, Hook struck again, sending a three-run blast over the fence in right to give RU an 11-10 lead, scoring Williams (hit-by-pitch) and Rodriguez (single).

During FIU’s six-run sixth, Hill turned the ball over to Spicer, who had worked 2.2 innings in last night’s game. Spicer got the final two outs in the sixth and then hung zeroes for the remainder of the game, retiring the first eight he faced before opening the ninth with a walk. Gaynor gave Spicer some breathing room with a two-run home run in the ninth and Spicer, hitting in Canuso’s spot, followed with a solo shot for RU’s first back-to-back homeruns of the year and a 14-10 lead.

Eight of RU’s nine starters hit safely in the game, led by Gaynor (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI), Hook (2-for-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Frazier (3-for-6, 2B). Rodriguez finished the day with three hits as well. Defendis celebrated his 21st birthday with a 2-for-5 effort, including a triple.

The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
