  • NORFOLK, VA – Seniors Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) and junior Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) each collected two hits and two RBI to back a strong effort from starting pitcher Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) as Rutgers defeated Old Dominion, 11-2, this afternoon in Norfolk. Kalb improved to 2-0 by allowing just two runs in 6.0 innings of work, while sophomore Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NY) picked up his second save with three shutout innings of relief. RU is now 5-1, while ODU falls to 9-6.

Old Dominion nicked Kalb for a single run in the bottom of the first, but the Scarlet Knights responded with two of their own in the top of the second, as Canuso opened with a double and scored on a single from Defendis. Defendis then moved over to second on the throw to the plate and to third on a mishandled sacrifice bunt from Dave Williams (Franklin, NJ) before scoring on a double play ball.

“Our guys swung the bats aggressively and did a nice job at the plate,” said head coach Fred Hill. “After giving up a couple of runs early, Kalb and Spicer did a good job of pitching with a lead by throwing strikes and getting ahead of the hitters.”

ODU responded with a run in the second to tie the game, its last run of the afternoon, before the Scarlet Knights scored nine unanswered runs to finish out the contest. They posted three more in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Gaynor, and two more in the fifth on Canuso’s second home run of the season. Another run crossed in the sixth, pushing the lead to 8-2, when Williams led off with a single and scored on an infield single from Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ). Rutgers broke the game open even further with three more in the ninth, highlighted by a solo home run from Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ), his team leading third of the season.

Kalb settled down after the second, retiring the side in order in the third and fifth and leaving two runners stranded in the fourth and sixth before handing the ball over to Spicer, who was once again brilliant in relief. Spicer allowed just a hit and a walk in his three innings of work, striking out three. The St. Peter’s transfer has allowed just one run in 10.2 innings thus far in 2005 (0.84 ERA), while Kalb improved to 2-0.

Rutgers banged out 13 hits, as eight of RU’s nine starters hit safely in the game.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Junior lefty Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) is expected to start for Rutgers.
