WILLIAMSBURG, VA – After driving in three of RU’s runs in a 6-3 win on Saturday, senior Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) was once again the hero on Sunday, driving in two runs in the top of the ninth with a one-out to snap a 1-1 tie and propel Rutgers to a 4-1 win over William & Mary this afternoon at Plumeri Park. RU starter Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) allowed just five hits and one run in 8.0 innings, but was matched by W&M starter Joe Kantakevich until the ninth. • WILLIAMSBURG, VA – After driving in three of RU’s runs in a 6-3 win on Saturday, senior Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) was once again the hero on Sunday, driving in two runs in the top of the ninth with a one-out to snap a 1-1 tie and propel Rutgers to a 4-1 win over William & Mary this afternoon at Plumeri Park. RU starter Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) allowed just five hits and one run in 8.0 innings, but was matched by W&M starter Joe Kantakevich until the ninth. With the win, RU improves to 3-0, sweeping the series, while W&M falls to 3-3.

With Kantakevich out of the game to start the ninth, RU loaded the bases against reliever Joe Roenker without a hit, using a walk sandwiched around two hit batters to trigger the rally. W&M head coach Jim Farr opted to leave the lefty-throwing Roenker in the game to face the right-handed hitting Rodriguez, who stung a single to center to score pinch-runner Donny Callahan (Sparta, NJ) and Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA), while Dave Williams (Franklin, NJ) scored on an outfield error. RU reliever Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ) then nailed down the win with a perfect ninth, picking up his first career save.

“It was a well-pitched game today,” said head coach Fred Hill. “The cold weather probably had some effect, but both starting pitchers got ahead in the count, threw strikes and kept the hitters off balance. I am very pleased with Aaron’s effort and with our guys for playing all nine innings.”

For the first time all weekend, William & Mary scored first, nicking RU Kalb for a single run in the first on three hits. After averaging 15 hits in its first two games, Rutgers had trouble solving W&M starter Joe Kantakevich, who retired the first nine hitters of the game and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Scarlet Knights put runners on first and third with two outs in the fourth on a walk and hit batsman, but failed to score.

In the sixth, RU tied the game when Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) lofted a two-out flyball to right field, which was misplayed by Chris Rahl into an RBI single scoring Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ), who reached with one out and stole second to advance into scoring position. In the seventh, Rutgers threatened for more, putting runners at first and third with one out on a walk to Williams and a single by Rodriguez, but Kantakevich induced a 3-6-1 double play with Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) at the plate to end the inning. It wasn’t until Kantakevich left the game that RU was able to break through with its big inning.

Kalb (1-0) allowed just five hits in 8.0 innings, walking one and striking out six. He did not allow a run over the final seven innings he pitched. Rodriguez, with two singles, picked up two of RU’s three hits.

RU, 3-0 for the first time since 2001, returns to action next Friday, when it travels to Atlanta, GA to face No. 14 Georgia Tech in a three-game series.
