  • WILLIAMSBURG, VA – Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) banged out three hits with three RBI and Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) homered for his first collegiate hit and added another RBI to back a strong effort from RU starter Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) and reliever Sean Spicer (Spring River, NY) as Rutgers defeated William & Mary, 6-3, this afternoon. With the win, RU improves to 2-0 for the first time since opening the 2001 season 6-0. W&M is now 3-2.

Pustay, who earned his first win in a starting role as a Scarlet Knight, worked 5.2 innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run, while walking four and striking out five. Spicer, a transfer from St. Peter's College, held the Tribe scoreless over the final 2.2 innings, striking out four, to pick up the save.

Rutgers got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) led off the inning with a crisp single to center and moved to second when Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) was hit by a pitch. Dave Williams (Franklin, NJ) then advanced both runners with a perfectly-placed sacrifice bunt, which set the table for Rodriguez, who stung a single to center to plate both runners.

W&M starter Michael Lafleur found himself in hot water in the top of the third, as Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) and Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) led off with back-to-back singles, followed by a walk to Canuso, to load the bases with no outs. Following a lineout by Hook, Williams lofted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in a run and Rodriguez dumped a two-out single into center, scoring Gaynor for a 4-0 lead.

W&M nicked Pustay for single runs in the second and fifth innings to cut the lead to 4-2, but Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) led off the top of the sixth with a mammoth home run down the line in right – his first collegiate hit and home run – to extend the lead to 5-2. (In doing so, Hill became the first Rutgers player since Val Majewski back in 2000 to open his collegiate career with a home run. Majewski homered in a pinch-hitting appearance vs. NC State on Feb. 18.)

In the bottom of the sixth, W&M used a single and walk to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, ending Pustay’s afternoon after 5.2 strong innings. Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) entered the game to Jon Rhymes and escaped damage with a lineout to Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) at third.

RU tacked on another run in the top of the seventh when Hill singled home Rodriguez, who had reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. RU threatened for more in the inning, but had two runners thrown out at home, including Hill to end the inning. The Tribe responded with one of their own and put runners on first and second with one out, but Hill went to the bullpen for Spicer, who struck out the first hitter he faced and induced a groundout to end the inning and maintain RU’s 6-3 lead. He struck out the side in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save.

Gaynor (3-for-5) and Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ), who was 2-for-4, joined Rodriguez and Hill as repeat hitters.

Rutgers will look for its first season-opening, series sweep since beating ODU in 2001 when the two teams reconvene on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Senior Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) will start for Rutgers.
