  • WILLIAMSBURG, VA – Making his collegiate debut in the leadoff spot, freshman Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) reached base in his first four plate appearances, homered in his second at bat, collected three hits and scored four runs to lead the Rutgers baseball team to an 11-5, season-opening win over William & Mary this afternoon at Plumeri Park. David Williams (Franklin, NJ) finished the day 4-for-4 with two doubles while senior Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) was 3-for-5 with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the ninth while sealed the game. It was RU’s fourth season-opening win in the last five seasons under head coach Fred Hill, as well as the first loss of the 2005 season for the Tribe.

“Our guys did a nice job today of getting out to an early lead and keeping the pressure on William & Mary,” said Hill, whose team scored in seven of nine innings. “I thought (Tom) Malafronte threw real well for us but just ran out of gas, and (OJ) DeChristofano did a real nice job in relief. It was great to see how our hitters responded every time they scored on us.”

Frazier got RU on the board in the first, beating out an infield single and scoring on a two-out single from Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ). After a scoreless second, Frazier homered to right-center with one out in the third, extending the lead to 2-0 while back-to-back doubles from Williams and Corey Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) added run another in the fourth.

RU starter Tom Malafronte (Somerville, MA) cruised early, allowing just one single through the first three innings. In the fourth, W&M pushed across an unearned run when Greg Sexton tripled and scored on a two-out error by Rodriguez.

Leading 3-1, the Scarlet Knights added another in the fifth, with Frazier once again starting the rally. After opening the inning with a sharp single to right-center, he wheeled all the way to third on an infield error and scored on a double-play ball by Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ). The Tribe reached Malafronte for another run in the fifth, closing the gap to 4-2, but RU responded with one of its own in the top of the inning, when Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) walked and scored on another double from Williams, who was thrown out trying to stretch his run-scoring hit to a triple.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tribe reached Malafronte for three runs, highlighted by a two-out, two-run home run from nine-spot hitter Terry Revere, which tied the game at 5-5 and signaled the end of Malafronte’s afternoon.

Wasting little time, RU reclaimed the lead with a four-run seventh, as Frazier was hit by a pitch with one out to get things started. With Frazier on first, Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) laced an RBI double off the fence in center, and scored two pitches later when Gaynor homered to straight-away center, providing RU with an 8-5 lead. Canuso then doubled to left and scored on a single by Hook, RU’s fifth-straight hit, to make it 9-5. In the ninth, Canuso crunched a two-run homer, scoring Gaynor (double) to add a pair of insurance runs and increase the lead to 11-5.

OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) picked up the win in relief, hurling 3.1 shutout innings in relief of Malafronte (5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). Williams led the 16-hit attack with his 4-for-5 effort, including two doubles, while Canuso and Frazier added three hits apiece. Canuso, who was 3-for-6 with a double, HR and 5 RBI in last season’s season-opening win over W&M, is 7-for-15 with 3 doubles and 10 RBI in four career games vs. the Tribe.

The two teams return to action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., with junior lefty Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) slated to start for Rutgers.
