  • NOTRE DAME, IN – The Rutgers baseball team (29-20) dropped its third-straight game, falling to Notre Dame, 5-3, in a rare Sunday night contest at Eck Stadium. Notre Dame jumped out to a 5-0 lead through five innings and its starter, Tom Thornton, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, earning the win. In the ninth, Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) homered to centerfield, setting the Rutgers career record with his 33rd blast.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two on a single run in the first and Matt Edwards’ two-run home run to left in the second. The Irish added another in the fourth on an RBI groundout to increase its lead to 4-0. Matt Macri’s leadoff home run in the fifth and a single from Steve Sollman brought an end to Jim Jansen’s (Hillsdale, NJ) outing with RU trailing 5-0.

Thorton cruised through the first five innings and took a no-hitter into the sixth before Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) skipped a two-out double past Macri at third. Thornton bounced back to retire Graig Badger (Union, NJ) on a flyout to left, keeping his shutout intact.

In the seventh, Rutgers finally broke through, stringing together four-straight two-out singles to produce two runs. Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) singled to left-center and moved to second when Jeff Miller’s (Wyckoff, NJ) flare fell in out of Greg Lopez’s reach. Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) and Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) followed with back-to-back singles up the middle, plating Canuso and Miller and cutting the gap to 5-2.

Thornton pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and turned the ball over to Toms River’s Ryan Doherty, who allowed a mammoth home run to Frazier to open the ninth, cutting the lead to 5-3. The home run, Frazier’s 12th this season, was also the 33rd of his career, setting the career school record, previously held by Pete Zoccolillo (32, 1996-99).

Jansen (4 IP, 7 H, 5 R) suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 5-1, while OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) provided four stellar innings of relief, allowing no runs and no hits over four innings, striking out four and facing just one batter over the minimum.

The four runs scored ties the fewest in a three-game series under head coach Fred Hill, matching a four-run effort at Georgia Tech in 1990.

RU returns to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Rider at 1:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights return home Wednesday to host St. Peter's at 3:30p.m.
