  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out eight, allowing just three hits and walking no one to lead the Rutgers Baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Pace Saturday afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. The victory is the Scarlet Knights’ fifth-straight as they improve to 28-16. Pace falls to 12-28 on the season.

Egbert found himself in early trouble after giving up a pair of singles to open the game, but Rutgers’ ace settled down after that, allowing just one hit the rest of the game. He did not allow an extra-base hit all afternoon, giving up the pair of singles in the first and a lead-off single in the fourth. Egbert retired the final 18 batters he faced, finishing off his stellar outing with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to improve his record to 7-3 for the season.

Pace was threatening with the pair of singles by JC Pullum and Rob Faist (who collected two of Pace’s three hits) to leadoff the game, putting runners at the corners with no outs. After a foul out to right field, Egbert registered his first strikeout of the afternoon. Faist stole second on the strikeout, but as Pullum attempted to swipe home and give Pace a 1-0 lead, RU second baseman Graig Badger (Union, NJ) fired a rocket to catcher Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ), who made the tag on Pullum for the third out of the inning.

Badger led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a groundout. Junior Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ), who tied the Rutgers career mark for home runs with 32 in his last game, drilled a single to left field to plate Badger and give Rutgers the 1-0 lead. The Scarlet Knights were not done yet, however, as senior Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) singled to right field to move Frazier to second and, after Gaynor advanced the runners with a ground out to the pitcher, sophomore Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) rocketed a two-run double down the left-field line, scoring Frazier and Canuso to give Rutgers a 3-0 advantage after one inning.

The Rutgers trio of Frazier, Canuso and Defendis, who combined to go 7-for-12 with four RBI on the afternoon, was at it again in the third as Rutgers tacked on another run to make it 4-0 in favor of the Scarlet Knights. Frazier and Canuso recorded lead-off singles while Gaynor once again advanced the two with a ground out to the pitcher. Defendis then belted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Frazier for his third RBI of the contest.

After scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, including an uncommon fifth inning witch saw the shortstop for both teams record all the outs, Rutgers did its final damage in the bottom of the sixth. Defendis once again provided the run for Rutgers, singling to right field to lead off the inning before stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. He then scored on a double to center field by senior Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ). Cerulo moved to third on a ground out to first base and junior Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) ripped an RBI single to right field, sending Cerulo home, signaling the end of the day for Pace starting pitcher Earl Oakes.

Oakes lasted 5.1 innings, surrendering all six runs on 10 hits, while walking one and striking out two. His replacement, Bob Van Riper, retired the next two RU batters in the sixth to end the inning, while giving up a hit and a walk, and striking out three in 2.2 innings of work.

Egbert cruised in the seventh, eighth and ninth, registering at least one strike out in each inning en route to his fifth complete-game of the season and 10th of his career.

Gaynor finished the game 0-for-3, ending his 12-game hitting streak. Overall, however, the junior has hit safely in 31 of his last 33 games.

Rutgers will face Pace in the back end of the two-game series on Sunday at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex at 1 p.m. Junior Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) is expected to take the mound for the Scarlet Knights.
