  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) slugged a solo home run in the third inning – one of three hit this afternoon – for his 32nd career HR, tying Pete Zoccolillo for the school record as Rutgers defeated Wagner, 13-2, at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. Junior Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ) allowed just two hits and two runs in 6.2 innings to improve to 3-4 this season and junior Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) capped the scoring with a ninth-inning grand slam as RU improved to 27-16. Wagner fell to 15-26.

Rutgers scored twice in the first on back-to-back triples from Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) and Frazier, following by an RBI single from Canuso, for a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the third, Frazier drilled a solo shot to deep left field, his 11th of the season, to tie the school mark which was set by Zoccolillo during the BIG EAST Tournament in 1999. The Scarlet Knights added two more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead when Graig Badger (Union, NJ) tripled home Jeff Miller (Wyckoff, NJ), who reached on a one-out double, and Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ), who followed Miller with a single.

Given a 7-0 lead following two more runs in the sixth on a Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) solo home run and a sac fly from Cerulo, Dial ran into trouble and ultimately lost his shutout, ending a scoreless string of 17 innings for the team’s pitching staff. After striking out Chris Dick, Dial walked Kane Furst and allowed an RBI triple to Nick Papa, who then scored on an infield groundout. Dial then hit Joey Malfattano and walked pinch-hitter Sean Ferguson, ending his day. Sophomore Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) induced a pop-up to end the inning and then pitched a scoreless eighth before turning the ball over to junior Tom Malafronte (Somerville, NJ), who finished with a scoreless ninth.

Rutgers capped the game with a sixth-run ninth, highlighted by Canuso’s blast. A one-out infield error opened the door for RU, which also received a two-run single from David Williams (Franklin, NJ). Following Nick Hoosier’s walk to Frazier which loaded the bases, Canuso greeted Wagner’s newest reliever, Joe Gorgoglione, with a grand slam down the line in left to finish the scoring.

Dial (3-4) allowed just two hits and two runs, walking six and striking out five. Rutgers collected 13 hits, led by Badger, who was 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. He also stole a base, his team-leading 23rd of the season and the 79th of his career, inching him within six of the Rutgers career mark of 85. Frazier was 2-for-4 with a home run, triple and three runs scored, while Canuso was 2-for-4 with five RBI. Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) lashed a third-inning double and has now hit safely in 12 straight and 31 of his last 32 games.

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Pace in a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m. Junior Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) is expected to start for the Scarlet Knights.
