  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Making his first collegiate start, freshman Chris Rini (Flemington, NJ) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as he and sophomore OJ DeChristofano (Pequannock, NJ) combined on a one-hitter for Rutgers, which edged Lafayette 1-0 this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. Rutgers collected 11 hits, but was 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11. With the win, RU is now 26-16 and has won 19 of its last 22 games. Lafayette falls to 22-23.

Rutgers threatened in the first against Lafayette starter Matt Ruvelle, as Graig Badger (Union, NJ) and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) led off with back-to-back singles and then completed a successful double steal to move into scoring position. Ruvelle, however, struck out Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) and induced a hard groundball from Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) that caught Badger in a rundown between third and home for the second out.

A two-out double from Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) in the second inning and the combination of a Badger walk and Frazier single in the fourth kept Rutgers knocking on the door until the Scarlet Knights finally scored in the fourth. Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) stroked a leadoff double and moved on third on a one-out single from Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA). Querns then lofted a sacrifice fly to left, which allowed Defendis to score easily from third for a 1-0 lead.

Rini, meanwhile, rolled through the Lafayette order, striking out the first two hitters he faced and facing just one over the minimum, due to an infield error, through the first four innings. He pitched a perfect fifth inning before nine-spot hitter Eric Vacca touched him for a clean single leading off the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Rini turned the game over to DeChristofano, who struck out two in the seventh and retired the first six hitters he faced before allowing a leadoff walk in the ninth. He rebounded to retire the next three hitters for his second save in the last three games.

Rini (1-0) walked one and struck out four, while DeChristofano also walked one and struck out four. The one hit allowed is the fewest since Shaun Parker (Mt. Holly, NJ) no-hit Villanova in a five-inning, rain-shortened game on 5/16/2003 and Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) allowed just one vs. Seton Hall on April 13 of last season (seven innings). On April 7, 2002, Tom Wheeler allowed just two hits in a nine-inning, complete-game win over Georgetown.

Querns, Jason Grover (Montgomery, NJ) and Frazier collected two hits apiece, while Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) was 1-for-3 with a walk, hitting safely in 30 of his last 31 games.

RU returns to action tomorrow, when it hosts Wagner at 1:00 p.m. Junior Erik Dial (Basking Ridge, NJ) will start for Rutgers.
